Mouse in Device Manager

I'm hoping someone can answer this puzzle:

I have an HP laser mouse attached (USB) to an HP computer
running Windows Me. Though the mouse works perfectly, it
appears like Device Manager can't figure out what the
mouse actually is...
There are 2 entries in Device Mgr. that puzzle me:

1) Under 'Mouse": First device entry - HID Compliant mouse
(seems fine), and Second device entry - Microsoft
compliant PS/2 Mouse - with a yellow "!". There are 2
other choices here that I can 'select', both being
Microsoft compliant 'something' mouse, and all 3 choices
show the same yellow "!" when invoked.

2) Another device is also (automatically) entered when the
mouse is plugged in: 'Human Interface Device'. The HID
then lists 'USB Human Interface Device' but with a
green "?" on it.

Anyone know what gives here??
Thanks - Ron Smith

If you previously had another mouse installed, that would explain why the
other entries are there - you probably didn't delete them before removing
your old mouse and installing this one.  The PS2 port may continue to show
up, no matter what.  You should just be able to remove those items.

The HID with the green question mark is likely just letting you know that
while the device (probably your mouse) is working, it may have (but not
necessarily) more features available with the proper drivers.  Have you
installed the drivers supplied by HP for the mouse?

Thanks for your post response. As a rule, I remove old
hardware devices from device mgr. before replacing them
with new devices - as in the case of replacing my old
mouse with the HP laser mouse. In fact, I have removed the
HP mouse from device mgr. and unplugged it a number of
times, rebooted after each removal, then rebooted again
with no mouse (using only my keyboard of course). Then,
after booting with the mouse plugged in, Windows PnP keeps
coming up with the same device configuration as I
described.
As far as the HID Device issue, originally installed the
HP mouse software but removed it when I realized I didn't
need the extra bells & whistles. Your explanation of a
device that has 'more features' seems valid in this case.
I'm not so much worried about that as much as
the "yellow !" bugs me. Incidentally, device mgr.
configured the mouse device the same as it does now when I
had the mouse software installed.
Further comments are welcome.
Thanks, Ron Smith
