Have a HP Pavillion N5420L Notebook computer running
Windows ME.  The CD/DVD drive is not available in
Windows. In device manager under Hard disk controllers,
both the primary and secondary IDE controllers present a
yellow exclamation mark and indicates that the device is
either not present, not working properly, or does not
have all the drivers installed. (Code 10).  If I use a ME
Startup floppy w/ CD support the CD drive works, or if I
use an XP CD it will boot from CD.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jeff

Try this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;151911&Product=w98

Note:
First do the Noide change then remove the controllers in control
panel -->system applet --> device manager.

Reboot and see what happens. The Ciontrollers will be reinstalled upon boot
up.

Thanks for your response.  There was no NOIDE key in the
registry to delete.  I have removed the devices from the
device manager applet, they keep reappearing in the same
state as described in my previous post.  Other than
upgrading to XP, I am not sure what the resolution could
be. ME is one of Microsoft's worse products in my
experience.

Did you ever install someones (any third party ) busmaster controllers ?? If
intel they may require special software for removal.

Try going to safe mode and delete the ide controllers -all of them.

No third party controllers were installed that I know of.
When I go into safe mode I can remove the parent IDE
contoller, but the child primary and secondary remain. I
tried rebooting in safe mode and the children are still
there.
