We have an Olympus D-560 Zoom camera that we are trying to
get to work with Windows ME. After installing the Camedia
software, we plugged in the camera as directed. As
expected the "new hardware" wizard popped up and stated
that the camera had been found.

For some reason we had problems installing the driver and
had to quit out of the new hardware wizard. We then
rebooted the machine. After starting Windows ME displayed
the hardware configuration dialog (with the drum) for
about 5 minutes. Ever since we have not been able to get
the new hardware wizard to show up. We also have not been
able to get the camera recognized at all when it is
plugged into the USB port.

We have a different camera that we've plugged into the
same cable and it pops up the new hardware wizard
immediately, so we know the cable is working. So for some
reason Windows ME seems to think this camera is installed,
but it is not.

Does anyone have a suggestion of what we can do to get
Windows ME to stop thinking this camera has already been
installed and to start over?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Try running System Restore (Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools \
System Restore) and roll-back to the last time/date BEFORE you installed
your camera and software. Reboot a couple of times and then try again.

Thank you for the advice. I will try that as a last
resort, but would prefer (even if it requires twiddling
the registry) doing something else first if possible.
Can't aford to hose the whole machine just for this camera
and I don't trust system restore a whole lot.

Any other suggestions? Any driver writers out there that
can tell me what got tweaked in the registry to make it
stop trying to register this camera?

Thank you again for the post. I will try Sys Restore as a
last resort..

Although I'm sure that you must have your own reasons for not trusting SR
(not to be confused with an OEM recovery disk, which would 'hose' your
system!), this type of situation is PRECISELY why SR was introduced into the
WinMe (and subsequent) OS's.

is fraught with far more danger - which could likely require resorting to SR
anyway!

However, you could try uninstalling your camera's software using Add/Remove
programs and delete any instances of you camera's hardware - (if any is
shown!) and possibly your USB controllers in Device Manage - preferably in
Safe Mode. Then reboot and try again.
