When I go to defrag my hard drive, it always re-starts the
process saying something about writing to disk. It seems
to get into an endless loop and it never is able to
complete the defrag process. This happens whether I use
the defrag process thru windows or thru Norton Utilities
(which I just purchased).

Your problem is Norton. Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut down everything except
Explorer. This hould help. If not go into Norton and disable everything. If
you are using Norton's Speed Disk you will have to shut down everything
except Explorer.

>I had the same problem. I got round it by giving it less
to do. press ctrl alt delete and close as many programs
as possible even if you are on the desk top, then open
de-frag and in the small window before you run de-frag
check the file system so it has less to do. regards

something is running in the background, causing
defragmenter to continually stop and restart. hit
ctl+alt+delete to get the task manager window. click on
each program listed *except for Explorer and Systray* and
click on "end program" (something like that; other choices
are shut down and cancel. then try defragmenter again. it
should work.
