Please bear with me. I've been using Windows ME for
several years now. I was having trouble with my CD-ROM,
and the tech people at Gateway told me they thought I
might have a corrupted file, so they instructed me to
reinstall Windows. My System Restoration Kit consists of
three discs. The first disc worked perfectly, but the CD-
ROM machine died during the second disc. Gateway sent me
a new CD-ROM, which I installed last night. Now I can't
get my computer to recognize my new CD-ROM player so that
I might continue installing Windows. I keep getting a
message that says "...access violation at address
00449BE5 in module INSERTCD.EXE Read of address FFFFFFF."
Even when I have the proper disc in the CD-ROM tray, I
get a message that tells me the machine is still waiting
for the disc. Please help!

Have you turned your PC off and un-plugged and re-plugged (re-seating) your
wide DATA cable and the smaller POWER cable?
Then reboot into SAFE mode, remove the offending hardware in | My Computer |
Properties | Device Manager |
Reboot into normal mode, it should re-install the correct software.
You may want to list your status of;
1. C:\Widows\Temp\ Temp Files ? How many?
2. Amount of RAM memory ?
3. Size of free space on Hard Drive ?
4. How many programs are running at the same time? ALT CTRL DEL
5. Last time and how often your run SCANDISK ?
6. WindowsUpdates ?
