After having scandisk run several times and lock up I finally rebooted my PC
for the last time as my hard disk had disappeared from the BIOS.  I have
been told that this means it is dead, and have bought a new one, but
wondered if anyone new how to get access to the files without going to the
expense of a data recovery company.  The disk is still spinning up.

Thanks

Tim

5. Connect the old HD as a Slave to the new HD which will
be the Master and use Windows Explorer to copy across.

There are at least 4 or more methods to copy files / folders;
1. Backup to your CD-R   (good idea)
2. Backup to your A:\ Floppy Disk  (bad idea)
3. Use a USB Cable between the 2 PCs similar to
4. Use a Parallel Cable between the 2 PCs
5. Connect the old HD as a Slave to the new HD which will
be the Master and use Windows Explorer to copy across.

I have already done this but as the drive is not recognised by either the
BIOS or Windows I am unable to copy anything across.

Then it's most likely the drive has failed and no efforts you can make will
recover anything from it.  A professional repair shop may be able to but is
it worth what it will cost?
