Can I use USB2.0 interface of portable hard disk in
WindowME?
I tried it, but my notebook didn't response to that.
Should I install some drive for USB2.0?

Thanks,

chanseok

Windows ME does not natively support USB2, and you would need to install
hardware (a USB2 port) and appropriate drivers (from the port manufacturer)
to enable USB2

Your portable hard drive should however work fine in USB1.1, although it
will obviously be very slow.

I am having a similar problem.  My Dell Laptop with
Windows ME does not auto recognize the Hard drive.  The
device manager says it cannot find the correct driver.
Western Digitial says it is a Microsoft Problem, Microsoft
said it was Dell's problem, and of course Dell said they
could not help me.  What great customer service.

I am just trying to use the USB 1.1.  Maybe I need to
upgrade to a 2.0.  I beleive this is a Windows ME issue as
the hard drive worked fine on my other laptop with Windows
2000.

I'm not too surprised at the lack of auto-recognition
I am slightly surprised that ME says it can't find the right driver (what is
it looking for? - USB drivers, HD drivers, or what)

BUT - legally, and assuming that the laptop was bought with ME pre-installed
by Dell - MS are correct in saying that it's Dell's problem (or maybe WD) -
because when Dell bought the license off them, they promised to support it -
which is why they got it for 3/10 of damn-all!
If Dell now claim they 'can't' help you - they may be right, unless you
manage to get higher up the food-chain in Tech support. If they say they
'won't' help - then they'll have a class-action suit on their heads in five
minutes!

If the other laptop has USB2 ports already installed, then this is a
non-comparison, because it will also have had drivers installed with the
USB2 ports
