no sound

I can't hear anything.  When I went to turn volume up it
won't move  then I noticed it said there's no sound device
installed   is my sound card dead?  can I use my recovery
cd/   HELP

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL (soundcard-related) Sound & Multimedia devices
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall required devices, hopefully
curing your problem
