Cannot upgrade file %1 from %2 on Startup

I installed my Lexmark Z705 printer using a Belkin USB2
(USB 2.0 Device Cable). The driver installed correctly but
when i restart my computer with the cable connected to my
computer i get the following message at Startup:

Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2
%1:%2
Windows could not upgrade one ore more system files before
starting
Windows may not start or run properly
If Windows fails to start, run SETUP again

When i have the cable not connected to my computer, my
system runs fine. No messages.

Any ideas?

Your %1/%2 error is caused usually by Norton LiveUpdate, corrupting the
System Restore archive - although there are other possible causes. Do a
Search for the file WININIT.INI - if you find it, then rename it to
WININIT.JNK, and reboot - your problem should be gone.

If you don't find it, then try this - Start|Run - enter SCANREG /FIX into
the dialog box, and click OK - windows will reboot - see if that fixes it.
If not, then do a Search on your PC for files named '_RESTORE' (without the
quotes) - you should find the C:\_RESTORE folder - r-click on it, and select
Properties. How many files/folders are there? If it's around 64 thousand,
then LiveUpdate has been up to its tricks again, and you'll have to
completely remove the folder  from DOS - use the following method, which
seems to be the easiest at present.

Reboot to DOS using your Startup disk enter the following commands at the
A:\> prompt.

ATTRIB -R -H -S C:\_RESTORE
REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

remove the floppy, and reboot to normal windows. - your error should be
gone, and you should now have a new, single restore point. Go to Windows
Explorer, and delete the C:\OLDREST folder

Didnt find the WININIT.INI file
If i do the second option, should i have the printer cable
connected to the computer with the printer in the ON or
OFF position?

Thank you.

It shouldn't make any difference - but I'd remove the printer completely
first.
once you have the problem solved, uninstall the Lexmark software, and
reinstall it again.

But it does make a difference because when the cable is
not connected to the computer, i startup fine with no
messages about the %1:%2 error, its only when i have the
cable connected. I wouldnt know if the problem is solved
because of it, im not sure what to do after that. Thanks.

The reason that you get the error is that it's only when the printer is
connected that the relevant part of the registry is active - once the
registry is corrected it doesn't make any difference, since windows reboots
to a 'proper' registry in the process.

Restore folder has only 4 files on it.
I did the SCANREG /FIX twice and both times my computer
gave me the same error on startup after installing the
printer and restarting the computer. Printer software is
installed but cannot communicate with my computer. Im at a
loss now.

OK - now do the _Restore Properties thing properly!!<g>

It's impossible for the C:\_Restore folder to contain 'only four files' -

Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to the C: drive
r-click on the C:\_Restore folder icon, and select Properties
report back

You are correct.
It has 64,000+ files in the folder.
I do not want to go any further with the process because
i am worried that i may do something wrong in the process.
I wish there was an easier method and it was the printer
not my computer. Thank you for your time and effort, but im
gonna have to contact a professional to work on my
computer before i go and try to do it myself.

Thanks

What you need to do now is simple enough - and takes only 10 minutes
Do you really want to spend maybe $75 for 10 mins work?

Reboot to DOS using your Startup disk enter the following commands at the
A:\> prompt.

ATTRIB   -R   -H   -S   C:\_RESTORE
REN    C:\_RESTORE    OLDREST

remove the floppy, and reboot to normal windows. - your error should be
gone, and you should now have a new, single restore point. Go to Windows
Explorer, and delete the C:\OLDREST folder

Not sure why you just didn't loop back to your original post where, naturally,
you had told the OP exactly what to do to solve their problem.  :-)

The reason why i dont want to go further is because
1. I dont have any experience working with my system other
than turning on the computer and turning it off, making
any adjustments that require a bootdisk is not available
to me at this moment.
2. I dont want to make any MAJOR mistakes.
3. I asked the computer guy at my job and he thinks it may
just be that i need to upgrade my usb driver from a 1.0 to
a 2.0.

go figure.

Noel has already told you the reason for the %1 %2 error in his first and
fifth posts to this thread and what you need to do to fix it.  That error has
nothing whatsoever to do with usb drivers.

I feel it is you who needs "go figure".

I apologize if you think my thread was disrespectful but i
am out of warranty and if i do anything wrong with my
computer, then i will have to pay that 75$ fee anyway. So
please be considerate of my reason for being cautious.

Not disrespectful but perhaps a waste of everyone's time including your own if
you aren't prepared to follow the advice you are given.  I'm still unclear as
to how you are going to fix the problem if you aren't going to do what needs
to be done.

Thank you for all your time and effort. I am returning the
printer. I fixed my original printer Lexmark Z52 and it
works great now. I use a parallel connection and
everything is good and working. Thanks for all your advice
and support

That won't fix your problem, either! - it'll still come back to bite you the
next time you try to install just about anything.

I can appreciate your caution - but providing you follow the instructions,
there's no need to worry about nasty side-effects - there are none!

Some time, you are going to have to take the bull by the horns - or get a
bank loan! <g>
