Hi there, my PC freezes up all the time and I have no
option but to shut it down with the power key and try and
boot it up again.  It goes through its disk check and I
log on again and sometimes get further along. Its
frustrating when using internet.  I can't be 100% sure but
maybe prob began after I loaded anti virus software. Is it
possible that I have too much stuff on hard drive and it
can't cope? Is there a way I can check without unplugging
and taking it to PC World, paying loads of money and being
told to trash it! Answers (if any)would be gratefully
appreciated,in simple speak please.  Thanks.

How much free space is on C:?  Hopefully, at least 500 MB?
Are there humdreds of MBs of files in the C:\_RESTORE folder, suggesting
System Restore has failed.

Will it run scandisk and defrag to completion?

Has the inside of the case been cleaned of all the dust bunnies
recently"
Are all the fans working well, esp., the cpu fan?

Temporarily disable the AV tool and retest.

Prune the startup group:

Startup Configuration for Program Launching

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab.  Compare the
listing there with the following Startup checklists:

http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Uncheck.htm
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startlist.htm - has trojan related items
listed
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Note:  Please ensure that you fully understand the purpose of a
startup item, how and why it was put into the startup, and the
consequences (if any) of removing it before you make any changes.
Some items are very important for the proper and safe functioning of
your computer, including at least one item that is listed twice,
LoadPowerProfile.

there
is so much request for a direct way to jump people to this "let's just
