I am using laptop with Windows ME. The computer boots up
and the mouse pointer (touch pad) responds as expected.
However, when trying to activate either an icon, or a
command, the primary mouse button does not respond. After
several reboots, if I manage to get defrag to run, the
mouse buttons respond properly for a while before stopping
to respond. Looking for steps to reconcile this problem.
Thank you.

A couple of troubleshooting tests you could try to help isolate the problem.
1) In Control Panel, select the mouse icon and try switching from RH to LH
(or other) and see if the 'problem' changes to the other (secondary) button.
2) Plug a second 'real' mouse (PS/2) into the laptop and see if you are
still having the problem.
If you finally prove the touch pad to be at fault, then I hope your warranty
is still good. If out of warranty, stick with the external mouse.
