Hi, I bought a laptop that came pre-installed with windows XP, however I own
a full copy of Windows ME on cd, and wanted to use it instead.

Does Windows ME support:
Firewire 400
PC Cards (PCMCIA)
Wireless networking (a pcmcia card  of the 11b standard)
DVD-RAM drives (the kind that can burn cdrs, cdrw, dvdr, dvdrw etc.)
Support for external monitor/tv out

And would it be possible, since my laptop supports booting from CD, to
create a cd that booted to Windows ME DOS, so I could then install it?

The laptop itself is an Athlon 3000 m, 1024MB ram, generic via chipset.

Thanks

See in line comments.  Note however that with 1GB of RAM that it is
ESSENTIAL to limit vcache to 512MB otherwise you will have major problems
due to running out of upper memory addresses.

For more details see:
MS KB 253912 - ""Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM
Installed" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=253912). The reason is that
allocating more than 512MB of RAM to vcache will exhaust all available
upper
memory addresses and thus prevent them being used for other purposes.
This
problem is easily fixed as follows:
To limit vcache, open system.ini and add the lines
[VCache]
MaxFileCache=512000
Note that this will still mean that all  memory is available to
applications
but is simply limiting the amount used as virtual cache memory.

"Windows Me has built-in IEEE 1394 support. To use all the capabilities of
the IEEE 1394 standard, your computer must have an IEEE 1394 adapter
installed. If your computer has a FireWire adapter, the adaptor is IEEE
1394 compatible. ..."  KB278714 - "Using IEEE 1394 (FireWire) Devices with
Windows Millennium Edition" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=278714).

> PC Cards (PCMCIA)

Yes

> Wireless networking (a pcmcia card  of the 11b standard)

Yes subject to the necessary drivers being available.

> DVD-RAM drives (the kind that can burn cdrs, cdrw, dvdr, dvdrw etc.)

This is dependent on the CD/DVD mastering software concerned having the
necessary drivers for the hardware.

> Support for external monitor/tv out

This is dependent on the video drivers for the graphics chip.

There is no reason why you should not be able to create a bootable Win Me
CD.  Many OEMs did so.  This can easily be done, for example, using
Ahead's Nero and no doubt other CD mastering applications also.
