Alex Levi - 16 Oct 2004 14:19 GMT I have P4 2.8GHz with 1GB RAM and 5GB of free space on my windows drive C. My WinME works very slow. For example, it takes about 10 minutes to delete a single file of 100MB! While on my WinXP that installed on the other drive it takes to delete the same file, less then a second.
What can be a couse of this? Can it be the problem that WinME can't handle more then 512MB of RAM?
Noel Paton - 16 Oct 2004 16:09 GMT Norton installed?

Alex Levi - 16 Oct 2004 16:43 GMT I have only Norton Ghost 9 Installed. I use this OS mainlly for games and for restoring my main OS (winXP) when needed. My CD drive isn't working very well so I'm using 2nd OS insted of Norton Ghost 9 CD Wizard for the restore process.

add the following line in the [vcache] section MaxFileCache=512000 There should NOT be anything else in that section, unless you have more than 1GB installed

Noel Paton - 16 Oct 2004 23:33 GMT Most likely cause is your AV - which is? Where are you deleting the file from? It's possible that you're forcing System Restore to create a backup of the file prior to deletion, which could take a few seconds
Also possible is a slight misconfiguration of the networking settings

Alex Levi - 17 Oct 2004 07:55 GMT I'm tring to delete a stored movie file from an instolled game "movie.dat" that takes about 150MB from local drive E while my WinME is located on drive C. my system restore is turned off and I don't have any Norton protection software installed on this windows. (I'm tring to delete this file while this game is NOT running).
It takes about 10 minutes to delete this file (or any other with this size).
I noticed that after the windows deleted this file, I lost space on my drive. I mean, I had to run scandisk to restore lost clusters.
I repeated the delete and the problem repeated.
what should I do? (beside reinstalling)

Noel Paton - 17 Oct 2004 10:00 GMT Are you sure that System Restore is properly disabled? change your folder options so that you can see Hidden and System files/folders, and look at the properties of the C:\_Restore folder - how big is it?
Is the E: partition on the same physical drive as the C: partition?
What does SCANDISK report about the drive (either E: or C:)? if there are *any* bad sectors, then it's time to replace it!
and what is your AV?

Mike M - 17 Oct 2004 10:13 GMT Files with a DAT extension *should* be ignored by the state manager but I agree this does sound very much as if the state manager is at work and archiving a copy of the deleted file to the system restore archive on C:.

Alex Levi - 17 Oct 2004 10:15 GMT I'm sure the System Restore is disabled and the size of the folder \_Restore on every drive C to F is 1KB and there are only one file in each of this folders. I scanned all my drives (C to F) and there are no bad sectors and it's all located on a single Hard Drive. I don't have any Antivirus Software installed on this OS. But I have one on WinXP and I scanned my PC with the latest definition and nothing was found.

Noel Paton - 17 Oct 2004 10:29 GMT C:\_Restore is only 1KB? How have you disabled System Restore? - by unchecking the *Statemgr entry in MSCONFIG? - You do realise that this means that the System File Protection is also disabled? All bets are therefore off, as to what the state of your system files is!
it may be worth installing and running Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com) to see what the status of your Installed Hotfixes is.

Mike M - 17 Oct 2004 11:00 GMT Noel, I suspect that Alex may not have enabled explorer to see hidden system files and folders despite your earlier post suggesting that he should do so.
Alex: When using Explorer, go to Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files".

Mike M - 17 Oct 2004 15:23 GMT Nothing but system restore does and Noel asked you to check the _RESTORE folder. If you are seeing just the one file in C:\_RESTORE then you do *not* have "Hide protected operating system files" UNchecked.

DataAccess: Q318202, Q832483, KB870669 DirectX DX9 SP1: KB839643-DIRECTX9 MSXML4: Q317244 Windows Media Player: Q828026, KB832353, KB837272 Windows Media Player SP0: Q828026, KB832353
All the hotfixes are marked with green "v" sigh - exept DataAccess that is not marked. And I don't have any red "x" marks.

You may have a virus/spyware hijack
download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling viruses are not present on your PC http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe
- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.
Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the CoolWebSearch hijacker. http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html
Use CWShredder, the removal tool: http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip
download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from your system.

Thank you for the assistance but I'll just reinstall the windows (it would be easier), it had crused and I can not log now into the windows or into the safe mode. Last good known configuration didn't help either.
Thanks again.

Norton is NOT as good as it likes to think it is - and is perfectly useless against modern commercial malware.
If you really want to reinstall ME over itself (which I suspect will NOT solve your problem), then look here for instructions first! http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/reinME.htm
