I got locked up on a web site and had to hard reset my
PC.  When it came up it quit displaying all but the
default desktop icons on my Windows ME desktop.  Also,
when I click on the Start Button, it depresses but nothing
happens.  And finally, I can browse files in Windows
Explorer.  I keep getting an error on security settings
preventing ActiveX controls on this page and it just shows
a couple of lines of garbage.  When I attempt to load the
classic view in Explorer, the same error message appears.
Am I dead?  Booting to safe mode allows me to Explore
everything but my desktop icons still don't appear even
though they are still in the \Windows\Desktop folder.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Joe,

Use System Restore to roll your system back to just before the bad
shutdown. Start | Program Files | Accessories | System Tools.
Pick a date closest to the time preceding the issue.

>.sounds like 1 of 2 things to me...have you checked
system resources lately?...right click my computer then
properties then performance..available resources shoult be
a minimum of 60%  if this checks out I would run a full
virus scan and then run adaware or spybot search and
destroy. If your resources are up...sounds like you have a
spyware or virus problem>
