There is no DUN upgrade for Win Me.

I suspect that you are referring to the upgraded DUN referred to in MS KB
285189 - "Dial-Up Networking 1.4 Upgrade Is Available"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=285189).  This update dates from May
2001 and is not required by those using Win Me.  I suspect the 2004 date
to which you refer is that when the associated KB article were last
amended.

it appears that my dun may not be working properly , sometimes it locks up
the whole system and i must reboot
is there a way to either upgrade or re load just the dun part, without
reloading windows??

Uninstall and then reinstall DUN using Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup
| Communications, select Details, then uncheck DUN from the list, OK and
Apply and then repeat but this time checking DUN.  Alternatively you could
perhaps use system restore to roll your system back to the state it was in
when DUN was working correctly provided that that was in the last week.

Reloading Windows is only very occasionally required and in all honesty
should only ever be done as the absolute last resort.  For example I don't
recall having had to reinstall any windows system on any of my systems
because of problems and have here a system (that multiboots) that started
life as a Win 98SE system in 1999 and now multiboots 98SE, Win Me
(installed as an upgrade on an image of the 98SE system in 2000) and XP
Pro SP2 (installed as an upgrade on an image of the Win Me system  in
2001).  I admit though that I am thinking about tidying up things on that
machine and clean installing XP Pro SP2.  :-)
