PROBLEM
This computer connects fine through my network dhcp broadband server, but
when I attempt to connect through dial-up networking it seems not able to
receive dhcp information and thus has no setting for dns servers etc... and
all I can get is page cannot be displayed.

ATTEMPTED RESOLUTION
I have re-installed modem drivers, dun and TCP/IP half a dozen and have
scoured the MS knowledge base. my feeling on this issue is that DUN is not
re-installing new files OR telephony files are corrupted OR something in the
registry is wreaking havoc. It's a Lucent winmodem brand new.

Seeing as you don't mind getting into your case you could try this and see
what happens... Open up the device manager and remove all modems. Turn the
computer off and physically remove the modem. Restart. Turn off the PC again
and this time put the modem back in and let Windows ME find/install the
drivers for it. Unless, of course, you have a CD. In that case when you
reboot without the modem in the case you should install the drivers from the
CD if it's has that as an option, then turn off the PC, and then boot. Don't
ask me why it seems to work (I've had to do this before) it just has in the
past and might be what you're needing to do.

I have a similar problem and went to a tech rep at Micro Center here and was
told that this is caused by the HOSTS file (not the HOST SAM
file)  . His suggestion was to find another ME user who was not having this
problem and copy their HOSTS
file  to a floppy and then copy it over to your C:\Windows directory. I have
not done this yet because I don't know anyone with ME loaded on their
machine. If you try this and it is successful please send me a copy of the
HOSTS file that you copied. Please attach it to an email sent to
dhunker@yahoo.com  Thank you.

Just delete it.  You don't need the file.

I have a similar problem and I can only find the hosts.sam file. Where is the
host file normally located?

This may be of help:

Note the file has no extension.

In which case you most likely have no HOSTS file.  Win Me includes no such
file, just a sample that can be used as a template if you decide to create
and use a hosts file.

In the Windows folder.
