I've had the same problems as many have described here, random Blue
Screens and browser failure. I discovered KB891711 on my own before
doing any research online, and I disabled KB891711 from msconfig and
then uninstalled it using Add/Remove programs, but not from Safe Mode
(as I said, I hadn't done any research and I wasn't really having
bootup problems, mostly the browsers seemed to be affected). I also
used Reg Edit to remove every trace of it from my registry. I noticed
that one of the hits I got when I searched the registry for KB891711,
was my AOL dialer .exe file, so I reinstalled my AOL software, and
Firefox as well for good measure.
After all that, I'm still having browser problems. The odd exception
is that the browser within AOL works fine, but both Firefox and IE
return "page not found" no matter where I try to go. My Norton Internet
Security has a traffic monitor that shows normal traffic in/out of the
computer when I load a page within AOL, and shows zero traffic while IE
and Firefox attempt to load the home page. (And since IE is still my
default browser, another consequence of this is that I've also not been
able to update my virus profile since last Friday night.)
Who the heck wants to surf the Internet through AOL's funky window
after you've gotten used to the joy that is tabbed browsing in Firefox?
I know, I know - who the heck is still on AOL anyway? Normally I'd
agree with you, but in this case having AOL saved my behind and is my
only outlet to the Internet right now.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? The only thing I can think of
short of wiping my hard drive clean and reinstalling everything, is
doing a "clean" AOL install - that is, uninstalling it, and then
reinstalling as opposed to just reinstalling over the last version -
just in case the AOL software doesn't reload common files and the AOL
dialer that was corrupted by KB891711 is still there. Just a
thought...could it be possible that the AOL software has something in
it that disables browsers other than theirs? Now that I think of it, I
got the disk I used for the AOL reinstall last Thursday, and I started
noticing the browser problem on Saturday evening.

Note that a revised version of KB891711 was released by Microsoft today
which should hopefully solve the problems being seen by some users.

Thanks, Mike! I'll look for it with fingers crossed.

Kb891711 did not disrupt my Internet connection when it caused my computer
to blue screen when I attempted to launch a browser. I did not use Safe
Mode, nor did I use System Restore to deal with the issue. I just used the
Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel. I did not even find anything in
the registry after doing that. IOW, Add/Remove Programs did not leave any
residual registry entries. You might want to try a System Restore to the
point before you installed the older version of Kb891711; I believe that
will also restore that version of the registry. At any rate, it seems that
something else is FUBAR in your registry.
Although the earlier Kb891711 broke my computer, the one I pulled tonight
does not.

I tried doing a Restore on Monday night but it would not restore to the
date I selected - which, incidentally, is good, because the date I had
selected was actually after I had already downloaded KB891711, though
before my computer started having problems. (I got this freaking patch
on my birthday.)
My biggest problem - on my computer, this file has rendered Internet
Explorer and Firefox useless. I access the web through AOL, but when
I launch either of the browsers (and they load fine), they act as if
I'm not online and "can't find" my home page.
Last night I tried connecting to Microsoft Windows Update from the
browser within AOL, and though it allowed me to scan for new updates
(after disabling my Firewall) and view the updates available for me, it
wouldn't allow me to download them - clicking on "Install now" did
absolutely nothing.
I read on another message board that the conflict created by this patch
seems to have something to do with Norton Anti-virus. That makes sense
to me, since I've also been having various wierd problems with Norton
since Sunday too. Sometimes it won't load on install. Sometimes the
virus definition's last update date is constantly refreshing so it
doesn't show when I last updated my virus profile. And the last time I
did a virus scan it kept stopping in the same place, while scanning a
folder which had no files in it.
I ended up reinstalling Windows ME last night, but it didn't finish til
after 2AM so I didn't have a chance to test anything afterwards.
Luckily I have a few days off from work starting tomorrow so I'll have
a chance to do more troubleshooting without worrying about the time.
If that doesn't work, I'm calling the Geek Squad.
