Hi There, I've recently got connected to Plusnet's 2MB unmetered service and I can't seem to get a decent connection speed. I have 2 PCs, 1 is a desktop running Win Me, connected to a D-Link DSL-G604T wireless ADSL router via a DWL-G122 USB (1.1) adapter. The other is an IBM thinkpad T41p using a wireless lan mini PCI adapter, Win XP, which also connects to the router. With the laptop I can get very close to 2Mbps, but with my desktop, the best I can get is 433kbps, although it averages 400kbps I have the following security options enabled WPA & Mac address access control, don't know if this affects anything, although doesn't seem to affect the laptop. I tried installing a 2.0 USB card and wired network interface card, the results are below: Using the USB 2.0 card: No difference. I even moved the AP right next to the USB adapter so that the signal strength was 100%. No cigar. Using the NIC: Connection speed lept up to around 600Kbps which is an improvement of approx 50% but still no-where near the consistent 1.8Mbps I can get with the laptop. Do I ditch ME and trying upgrading to XP? Anyone got any other ideas on other settings I could change on ME box? Frustrated. Pep > Do I ditch ME and trying upgrading to XP? Anyone got any other ideas on > other settings I could change on ME box? The OS shouldn't affect your connection speed. I regularly pull 1,290 to 1,301 downloads with SBC Yahoo! DSL Service on their 1,536kpbs Express package. PPPoE and ATM overhead eat the difference between what I actually get and my potential maximum; all with Windows ME. USB 1.1 should be good for 12Mbps, considerably higher than your 2Mbps maximum. Have you tweaked your MTU settings in the Windows ME computer? It should be capable of matching the Windows XP dl/ul speeds. Both RWIN and MTU are optimized for dial-up connections in Windows ME. BroadBandReports has some tools to manage optimzization of each for HSI connections. IIRC, my RWIN is about the same as yours. If your DSL requires PPPoE, MTU has to be lowered from 1500; I am using 1492, but others have had to go lower. I don't know if the same applies for PPPoA. I think that DSL users who don't need PPPoE can go with the MTU at 1500. Solved it. No one knows why this works, it is illogical and does not compute. However, it doubled my cable speed! I've got 1461 kbps download speed now; instead of 765 kbps with a DefaultRcvWindow value of 64240. My upload speed is only 375 kbps. Are there any unusual hacks to bring that speed way up too? ******************************************************************* http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php This is an old beast back in our downloads list by popular demand. Note this is an older patch, by a company that is no longer in business :). A lot of people reported drastic speed increase using this patch in the past. It's a program that was supported by @Home Cable Modem Service at the beginning of 1998, and it claims to make registry changes in order to increase Cable modem performance. The only key it makes changes to, that I'm aware of is "DefaultRcvWindow". It changes it to "373360" ?! The only disadvantage that I know of, is that that the 373360 RWIN value seems bogus, since it is not multiple of MSS. Another fact is that such large value is not supported under Windows 95 and NT4, only Windows 98,98SE,ME,2k,XP have Large TCP Windows Support. To get the last bit of performance out of your Cable Modem, I'd recommend changing the RWin setting to some multiple of MSS after applying the patch (use our TCP Optimizer, check the Registry Tweaks section , or install one of our Generic Registry patches) after applying the @Home patch. This patch was not supported by the @Home staff after 1998, according to them "It might cause some problems with stream video..." If you still want it, you can download it from here. I couldn't reproduce any problems with "video streaming" while running the patch. Road Runner is advertising a 5,000kbps download plan, so your 1,461kbps seems a tad shy of your potential maximum. I don't see an upload speed mentioned, but yours seems in the ballpark for a standard 384kbps plan. BTW, Road Runner is claiming to be 3x faster than DSL. As usual, though, the cable company is using last year's DSL speeds for this year's comparisons. For half the price of 5-6Mbps down DSL will give you half the speed; but often with twice the up speed. It is set on my WinME computer, but plugging the value (30324) into a registry search draws a blank. The actual site I used which contained details of Win ME tweaks was this one: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=119 The only tweak I made was the first one. There's a handy download called Dr TCP (just search using google) which you can also use to tweak your registry without manually having do it in regedit. Hope this helps. Pep > Thanks, Norman.
