Running "WINDOWS ME" and switched to DSL service provider. Vendor's set-up
disk contains "EXPLORER 6.0" and DSL vendor requests I upgrade to supported
6.0, but I keep receiving message that my computer was unable to install all
compontents. My DSL vendor got me live on DSL without the upgrade, but I
cannot access all the benifits without 6.0. I haven't deleted my AOL software
yet. Any suggestions on getting 6.0 successfully installed?
For the "unable to install all components" issue with IE6SP1 and Win ME, try
this:
Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK
Create a folder named "Old uninstall".
Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.
Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.
Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.
You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.
If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.
Good luck,
Zee

Your ISP is Verizon. There are no real goodies there, that I can't get from
a paid Yahoo!, or MSN account (depending on your preference). As an SBC
customer, I can pick the SBC Yahoo! junk; but I don't. Anti Virus,
Firewall, Anti Spam, Anti Spyware; I can handle it all without the ISP
software bundle. I could even deal with "Parental Controls" without their
software, if I needed it. What you get is a bunch of software with enough
bells and whistles to run your own railroad; and a tendency to crud up the
system. And are doing this on a system which already had AOL on it? Its a
wonder things still work decently!
Get rid of everything AOL. Add nothing Yahoo! (well, except for their
Messenger client, if you have contacts on their network. If you must have
parental controls, only load the minimum software necessary. You should be
able to run with just the generic MS Internet Explorer that came with the
OS, though.
I have nothing from my ISP installed, only the generic Yahoo! Pager from
before SBC cut a contract with Yahoo!. There are good free anti virus
programs out there, better than Yahoo! And good anti spam programs, better
than Yahoo! You left AOL; why are you trying to get AOL silliness from your
new ISP?

I just signed up with verizon DSL ($14.95), originally went with AOL because
the kids wanted their IM, now they are grown & gone. I plan to delete AOL
before the next billing cycle. The Explorer 6.0 up-grade was needed for me to
sign up with MSN services (a partner with Verizon) which includes (no
charge) fire wall, anti-virus and etc. It's working now and I thank you for
your feedback.
Any suggestions on how best to handle losing a long time email address and
getting everyone on board with the new address?
