ActiveX Not Supported

Can someone help please.

I have long advocated the use of the free on line AV scans (does no harm to
double check now and again) but today I can't access any of them. Tried Panda,
trend, Bitdifender and Kaspersky to no avail.

This problem arose apparently in a dispute between EOLAS and Microsoft as to
how ActiveX was used on certain sites/programs. American Courts found in
favour of EOLAS forcing Microsoft to amend its systems

Their would seem to be a problem for 98/Me users who utilise the Automatic
Update Facility within Windows. There was a problem with download KB912812
reference to the case mentioned above affecting ActiveX.
A temp fix KB917425 was soon offered up to users of Windows XP SP2 to rectify
the problem.

Unfortunately I can't find either ref on my computer. As so many programs
utilize ActiveX now I'm at a loss as to how to rectify the problem. Read one
post from a 'techy' who tried reformat/reinstall for a client which did not
resolve.

All the 'Eolas' patch does is require that the user make an extra
mouse-click - it has not generally caused any problems in WIn9x (although it
did cause problems for some users of XPSP2)
there is almost certainly something else wrong with your PC - usually the
settings in the Security/Privacy section are the cause of such problems.

Hi Noel

Thanks for the reply

some links I found yesterday. Gave up after almost 10 yrs straight trying to
resolve.

unfortunately can't find microsoft forum page where KB912812 is discussed at
length. This all happened in April. Only came accross the problem yesterday
though.

Hmm - I think the guys in that thread are barking up all sorts of wrong
trees.

All the AV sites have re-written their code (where applicable) for  the
patch, and run happily on all the PC's I've thrown at them with the patch
installed.

You're probably better asking this  in the dedicated windowsupdates
newsgroup - or even phoning MS direct, as support for Security patch
problems is free.

What concerns me, though is the apparent 'delayed action' of your problem -
the path was installed early April, and it's now late May, yet the problem
has only just surfaced. This would tend to indicate that it's not the patch
itself, but a third-party 'something' that's interfering..... what have you
installed onto the system lately - either hardware or software??

Have you had any software problems? any virus/malware problems??

I assume that you've uninstalled all early versions of Sun Java? (NOT just
installed the latest version - which doesn't uninstall the older ones!)

Did you check the licks off the MS page? - specifically

could try the above, though not very computer savy.19052006

Strange my WU History tells me all updates installed however can't find them
in Add/Remove or anywhere else?????

This is not unusual - Hotfixes don't appear in the Add/Remove list unless
they are uninstallable -and many aren't

If you want to check what's actually installed (and whether it's installed
properly) - use Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com)

AFAICT, there's nothing in that link that you don't already know from the
links that I gave you, and that you had already posted
