I used to use dial up for my ME and there is no problem such as infections
etc. Just got my cable broadband which when I connect it directly to my
Labtop via ethernet cable, I can surf the net.

However, when I connect the ethernet cable to my ME (desktop) I cannot
access the internet. Start>command>ipconfig/all> does not show any ip address
nor the gateway (both blank). Is there anything I must do before be abl to
connect to internet, thanks.

Check that your network card is configured correctly.  Has this ever
worked?  Right click on Network Neighbourhood (or Control Panel |
Network), go to the Configuration tab, highlight TCP/IP in the list of
network components and then click Properties.  On the Bindings tab check
that it is bound to Client for Microsoft Networks, on the IP Address tab
ensure that it is set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and that
"Detect connection to network media" is checked.

PS, in addition to using the DOS command ipconfig you might find using
winipcfg a useful alternative (it is simply a GUI front end to ipconfig).
