Try and establish the reason for the failure. You can do that by checking the
files iuhist.xml (in the Program Files | WindowsUpdate\v4 folder) and Windows
Update.log (in your windows folder). Locate the entries for the failed
updates (you should be able to identify from the times), note the error codes
and then check them using the WindowsUpdate troubleshooter at
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ Hopefully this will give
you a clue as to what is causing the problem.

Thanks Mike,
Well, according to the log file, the failed install caused
this error:
25 Error IUENGINE See iuhist.xml for details:
Install finished (Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error)
So I then checked the iuhist.xml file which gave me this:
<installStatus value="FAILED" needsReboot="0" errorCode="-
2147467259" />
I went to the troubleshooting page you suggested but I
can't see anything remotely similar!
Any further suggestions?
Thanks,
John

I'm sorry John but 80004005 is a new one for me and I can only find a few
references to this code when using WindowsUpdate. May I suggest you post your
query together with this additional information to the
microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup where hopefully you'll get a more
useful answer than any I might suggest. <g>

John,
This error code 2147467259 seems to indicate an issue with the MSJet
database :
" -2147467259 Error ODBC Microsoft Access Driver: The database has been
placed in a state by an unknown user that prevents it from being opened
or locked. "
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307640
If you have not installed this :
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8
http://msdn.microsoft.com/isapi/gomscom.asp?TARGET=/downloads/details.aspx?Famil
yID=6c050fe3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en
" Overview
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 contains core Data Access
components such as the Microsoft SQL Serverâ„¢ OLE DB provider and ODBC
driver. This redistributable installer for the MDAC 2.8 release installs
the same Data Access components as Microsoft Windows Server 2003. "
suggest downloading and installing to see if it alleviates the issue.
If you DID DO the MDAC 2.8 update, then it's *most likely* that you need
the Jet 4.0 Service Pack 7 :

Please post back with your results.

I keep getting the Media Player 7.1 update on a daily basis. The update
gets downloaded correctly and installed without any error, but the next
day it is downloaded again and there for me to install.
