I too recently ran the update for 6.0 service pack 1.
Following the update, none of the Java applications are
displayed. IE Intellicast radar (Java) This is just an
example. I use a lot of Java displays from the internet
for professional reasons. Interestingly, they still run on
computers I have that have not been updated. Anyone have
any ideas.

Hi Mow,
After I downloaded I.E. 6.0 service pack 1 and did a
norton virsus check, none of the Java applications would
open a window. I believe the app is loading as I can see
there is a transmission going on but the app window does
not display any information. I used the example of Java in
intellicast. For example I click on Radar - Java. The
window appears to open but thats it. All Java apps. are
the same. Nothing is displayed in the window. I'm really
discouraged with this whole thing.

Gary,

Somethin' ain't kosher ... is IE6 SP1 listed in Add/Remove Programs ?
You're employing the MS java machine, correct ?
If so, check to see the version number :
Start | Run |type in   command  | Press Enter or click OK
At the prompt type in   jview   hit Enter. It should say " Microsoft
Command-line Loader for Java version 5.00.3xxxx." Which version are you
seeing ? Or, are you seeing any version at all ?

Hi Mow,
It's Microsoft command-line loader for Java version
5.00.3810 and "Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE6) SP1 and
internet tools" is listed in the add/remove programs.

Check your settings in Internet Options | click the Advanced tab and
make sure that , under Microsoft VM, JIT compiler for virtual machine
enabled is checked. The only other place in Internet Options to check
would be on the Security page. Click the Security tab, click the
Internet icon to highlight it, click the Custom Level button, under
Microsoft VM make sure Disable Java isn't chosen. Check Trusted
sites , too.
Heck, you could always download and install the Sun java package since
they're going to be the ones to support all future versions of it.

Hi Mow,
First I'd like to thank you for the help. I've been over
the settings and JIT (I think thats just- in -time) is
enabled. I looked specifically for the Disable Java under
VM but couldn't find a radio button for that. Every thing
else was enabled. Under security, that all looked ok too.
As a side note I had a virus, I think it was "trogan
horse", anyway I deleted the inocculated file. I wonder if
that could have had anything to do with it.

I've read about the Sun stuff. I'm pretty gun shy now.
Does Sun simply overwrite the files already there. Again
thanks for all your help.

Gary,

You're very welcome. Sun would be the default java application if you
choose to install and make it so. Have installed it along with Netscape
and as a stand-alone and one of the two installations does not make it
the default java app for IE. Can't recall which method did it, though.
It can be made the default app by opening the Java Plug-in Console in
Control Panel , click Browser tab, select IE. What effect would a
damaged MSJVM  have ? ... don't think it would as long as the Sun
version became the default.
Been looking around and there appears to be a "method" for the manual
removal of MSJVM. Can't vouch for any on them, though. Just do a search
on google if you're curious.

By the way, the only setting to disable java in Internet Options is on
the Security page and is reached by clicking the Custom Level button
after highlighting the Internet icon.

Can you recall which file it was ?

Hi Mow,

This was a post from Norton. It asked me if I wanted to
delete this file and in my infinite wisdom, presto - gone.
Interestingly, it looks like a Java file.

The file VerifierBug.class in compressed file
C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
\GT4D7FEN\archive[1].jar is infected with the Trojan Horse
virus.
This file was quarantined.

Gary,

MSJVM has no file that resides in TIF. Did you try to find info on the
suspected trojan ? Having Norton on your system makes it even more
likely that the java package was damaged by Norton than a virus/trojan.
Norton is well known for giving off false reactions to java. I'm not
dismissing the likelihood that it could very well have been a trojan,
but without researching it, wouldn't put my faith in Norton alone.

Hi Mow,

You had tried to help me so much I thought I would let you
know the resolution to my problem so maybe you can pass it
on to others. As you may remember, Java apps would not
open. I tried all settings etc. to no avail. It kind of
frustrated me as I am a Visual Studio guy. I couldn't get
Java back . Last night I bit the bullet and logged on to
Sun MicroSys. and downloaded the Java-2 app. All is back
and working now. It's a no brainer. So, if you run into
anyone with the same problems, just have them download the
Sun Micro app. Since my origional post, I have talked to a
lot of people who have had the same problems a I had.
Thanks again.

See ya,

Gary

Gary,

Thanks for the feedback. Either Norton damaged/corrupted the MSJVM
during download/installation or the trojan that was reported in TIF (>

damaged/corrupted MSJVM, although I wouldn't rely on Norton's reporting
of it as a Trojan Horse. Replacing it with the Sun java package is a
smart move. MS will not be offering java in the future according to
current court rulings. Sun is going to be responsible for updating and
patching it. Remeber to check with them for updates/patches, etc.
