I upgraded from Windows 98SE about a year ago and
experienced no surfing problems.  A couple of months ago I
tried to reach www.roxio.com via Netscape, my preferred
browser.  After a short time I received the message "The
operation timed out when trying to reach www.roxio.com"
Using Internet Explorer the message was "The page cannot
be found"  So, I tried to reach www.microsoft.com with
exactly the same results.  However, with very few
exceptions I can access all other URLs.  I have no idea
how long the problem existed but I do know that some time
after the upgrade to Me I had been able to contact
www.roxio.com.  Peculularly, I can access www.roxio.ca
although it does me no good because all navigation from
there is to www.roxio.com.   This communication is coming
from my wife's computer running Windows Me original and
via the same cable Internet server and a router.  And
bypassing the router and connecting the cable to my
computer does not solve the problem.  Has anyone any ideas?

Miles,

Check for the existence of a HOSTS file . It would be found in the
WINDOWS folder and be opened with Notepad. (Note: HOSTS.sam is just a
sample file. HOSTS has no extension) Look for any reference to
Microsoft.com or roxio.com. If you find any, delete them. Save the file
before closing it.
These numbers represent a fixed URL and , as you've found out, they are
dynamic . The HOSTS file could have been created by a download manager,
internet "speed" booster, or a spy/adblocking program .
