I cannot play DVDs on my media player!! HELP!  I have
problems with my DVD player and want to try to use media
player.  I think I may need to update my decoder software
or something like that?  How do I do this, or is there
anything else I need/should do?  Does anyone know of
other DVD player programs I could download for free?

DVD decoders can be either hardware or software but in both cases cost money
due to legal requirement to pay royalties to the MPEG-LA, who represent the
patent holders, in respect of their intellectual property rights for the
design of the mpeg-4 standard.

Software DVD players such as Cyberlink's PowerDVD
(http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/products/product_main.jsp?ProdId=28) or
Intervideo's WinDVD
(http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/WinDVDPlatinum_Profile.jsp) both include the
necessary decoder/codec.

Reinstalling your DVD playing software should restore functionality.

Ensure that the DVD drive has "DMA" checked:

Control Panel/System/Device Manager (View by Type)
Highlight your DVD drive (you may have to click on the + sign)
Click on Properties
Settings Tab
"DMA Enabled"

Where is it?

I'm running XP Pro with SP1 and I couldn't find any DMA box to check.

Firstly you might want to note that this is a newsgroup supporting those using
MovieMaker 1 in Windows Millennium rather than XP.

As for enabling or disabling DMA when running XP you will find the option to
use "DMA if available" rather than "PIO Mode" for each connected device on the
Advance Settings tab of the Properties Sheets for each IDE channel in the
Device Manager in the section "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers".  The same tab will
also tell you the current transfer mode for each connected device.

Sorry about that - thought I was in the windowsme.moviemaker NG rather than
the windowsme.multimedia NG when I posted my previous message.  :-)

Siily me - I was looking in Properties for the device itself.

Jerry,

No, not silly at all since in Win 9x systems that is where you will find the
checkbox to enable/disable DMA (Device | Properties | Settings).  Its just
another example of where XP puts things in a different place.  :-)
