Followed Microsoft Knowledge Base 826812 Connecting XP to
ME Home Networking, Install TCP/IP on ME computer.  But
it doesn't install.  All I get on reboot is a networking
diconnect icon.  Cannot get the computers to recognize
MSHOME network, suspect the protocols are different.  The
article above adresses that but it doesn't work for me.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

How exactly are you trying to connect the two computers?  With what
hardware?  A "network cable disconnected" icon in the tray means exactly
that, no physical connection is present.  It has nothing to do with
protocols.

Yes.  That was a thought.  Each computer is physically
linked to a D Link Router.  The D Link is linked to a
modem.

hmmm maybe I should go back to LinkSys router.

I was having the same problems. I had Zone alarm on the ME computer. It was
the free version. I have zone alarm pro on the XP computer. Zone alarm free
will not allow networking.

NIS, if not configured, will produce the same problem.  Configure NIS to allow
file and printer sharing by opening the following ports. TCP 139, 445; UDP 137,
138, 445.  Preferably only between trusted ip addresses.

The free version of ZoneAlarm DOES allow networking.  You need to put
the local area network in the Trusted Zone, not the Internet Zone.

Q: Steve, if you put the router address, usually the base address of the
LAN in trusted zone, will ZA then recognize internet traffic coming through
there as also trusted? I know this doesn't happen with ZAP, but not so sure
about the freebie. If not sure, I'll do my own tests and post back, thanks.

Internet traffic comes from public IP addresses on the Internet, not
from the router's IP address.

Putting the router's subnet in the Trusted Zone allows un-solicited
incoming traffic from IP addresses on local area network to come in.
It has no effect on un-solicited traffic from the Internet.

Internet IP addresses are in the Internet Zone and will be blocked,
provided that you've set the security level for the Internet Zone to
the recommend setting of High.
