Hi,
I have exactly the same problem except my office files
reside on a windows 2000 server. I have found a knowledge
base article 293793 that says we need to contact microsoft
for a fix but I can't find a way of doing this without
incurring a charge and I refuse to pay them for something
I feel I should get for free. So I'm living with the
problem. In my case, the problem only occurs when clicking
on the file in windows explorer, it does not occur if you
open the application (e.g. word) first and then use the
file open function within Word to navigate to the shared
drive and select the file that way.

Steve

Steve,
To quote KB 293793:
"To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain
the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone
numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web
site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS
NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls
may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific
update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to
additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific
update in question."
If you read the last paragraph you will see it clearly states "charges that
are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft
Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your
problem". So provided you ask no other technical query and can show that you
are experiencing the problem covered by KB 293793 you will not be charged for
the patch.
