Do you have the Windows XP firewall turned on, or a third-party firewall
installed on your XP computer? If so turn it off and try again.

There are many possible solutions, Lee. Please reply to this message
in the news group (not by E-mail) with more information to help other
people understand the problem:
What does "see my pc but not view mine" mean? What exactly does she
see? How is she trying to view yours? What happens when she does it?
What is the complete text of the error message?

I fought with this problem for weeks and then installed NETBEIU. Here is a
link that will explain how to do that.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q301041
Some have said this is not the right way to fix this issue. All I can say
is that I found no other way to get my ME machine to access the XP one. I
have not had any network problems what so ever since installing the NETBEIU
protocol.
Fred Marshall - 27 Aug 2004 15:13 GMT
I've had the same experience.
However, to add to the discussion, I believe the problem of the XP machine's
files not being accessible happened *after* NetBEUI was first installed on
the ME machine.
It was then that installing NetBEUI on the XP machine allowed it to be seen
once more.
So, one has to wonder if removing NetBEUI from the ME machine would have
*also* fixed the problem.
Unfortunately I have to apply the principle, "if it ain't broke, don't fix
it" and need to be expedient in fixing customer problems. I remain working
to understand this and related issues so I can do a better job.
Steve Winograd here will tell you that only TCP/IP is needed - and I have no
doubt this is correct.
Carey Holzman's paper http://www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm recommends
that all 3 protocols be installed - and that's what I had done on the ME
machine. This paper is often quoted as "where to go" for advice on dealing
with network problems.
Steve Gibson has an interesting paper that I've not completely digested:
http://grc.com/su-bondage.htm he seems to point out that TCP/IP is all
that's needed and then advocates installing NetBEUI with particular
settings.
My guesses right now are: Steve W. is correct in his advice; Carey has
learned that his advice just seems to work. Steve G. says that NetBEUI
makes local network access run smoother. In the mean time, I am wondering
if having NetBEUI present anywhere on the network doesn't cause a situation
(and problems) that is subsequently fixed by adding NetBEUI to the other
computers?

I had a suggestion, but decided it might not apply, if I made the wrong
assumptions. To clarify the matter, let me make a statement, and ask a
question; or three.
> Ive got the workgroup on mine and access her shared folders etc BUT she can
> see my pc but not view mine...
See but not view; see, as in she sees the icon for your computer after
double clicking on the workgroup icon in the "Entire Network"? Not view, as
in she can't view any of your shared resources when she double clicks on the
icon for your computer?
> ..just got her Internet Gateway connected so she
> can get Internet Access.
Is this Internet Gateway the IP address for your computer? It sounds like
you are using ICS, with your XP connecting to the Internet, and her ME going
through your XP to the Interenet.
> Any ideas on how she can view my shared folders? And will the internet
> Gateway stay on?
Some, involving browse master; and, yes, the Internet Gateway should stay on
after any of the changes I might suggest.
