Startnetworking without reboot

Jake Montgomery - 20 Oct 2004 22:36 GMT I hope this is possible, as I have already spent a lot of time trying to get it to work.
MY SETUP: A tower running XPPro and a laptop running ME. I have created a workgroup, and successfully networked the two computers through an old 10T8 hub. I am only using TCP/IP.
WHAT WORKS: If I have the laptop Ethernet card plugged in to the hub when I boot it, everything works file, and I can use printers and share files on the XP machine.
PROBLEM: I would like to be able to have the laptop already running, and attach it to the network. Unfortunately, if I do that I get the "Unable to browse network" error when I go to 'Entire network'. 'net view' gives me a 6118 error. I can ping my XP box from the laptop in this case. Strangely, I can even access the shared resources on the ME laptop _from_ the XP machine (but not the other way around.)
Is there any way to get the ME machine to connect to the network after windows is already running. Is my behavior normal, or do have have a problem.
Thanx in advance, Jake.

I would rather not log off, and back on. But for some reason, even that does not restore my network connection. I must have the Ethernet cable connected when I first boot the machine.
As noted, I can 'ping' the XP machine, and use other services. I just can not access the network (file and printer sharing) in any way if I connect after booting.
Thanx, Jake

It can take up to 15 minutes after a computer connects to the network before network browsing works. During that time, you should be able to access another computer by typing the other computer's name in the Start | Run box preceded by two backslash characters:
\\computer

As mentioned earlier 'net view' also can not see anything.
I must admit that I misspoke when I said that i can see the laptop from the XP machine. That was a different scenario. I can see the _network_ from the XP machine, but the laptop is not on the network.
Is there any way to 'restart' networking services on the ME machine after is is already running?
Is there anything I can do on the XP machine to make this work?
Thanx, Jake
Noel Paton - 22 Oct 2004 20:55 GMT Do you have any kind of firewall on the ME box? - if so, then disable it and see if that helps

You got it! It was ZoneAlarm. I had checked the logs and it _said_ it had not blocked anything, and yet when I shut it down, everything works fine. Now I need to go to the ZoneAlarm group and find out how to fix it. Many Thanx.
Jake.
[P.S.] I dont know why my newsgroup program did not include the entire post in this reply.

I would say that it is the Mail & News client in a full Mozilla install. When I open Mozilla, and go to Help > About, I see this:

Noel follows the MSFT custom of top posting, putting his signature between his reply and the quote of the previous message. It looks like he is using MS Outlook Express with the MS Windows XP SP2, which repaired a broken feature of MSOE; it adds a proper signature separator, a "dash-dash-space- endline" sequence.
You are using the Mail & News client of Mozilla 1.7.3. This, unlike MSOE, is not broken, and follows the standard of stripping all parts of a quoted message after the signature separator. Your client is working as designed, which plays havoc when a top posted message, with the signature placed between the reply and the quote, has a standards compliant signature separator. You will not cure top posting; all you can do is the extra work of cutting and pasting the previous post to fix the problem. Or ignore the problem, and the trimmed quotation.

Perhaps someday there will be no top posting? (Utopian dreamer?)
