No protocol for wireless adapter (also using dial-up)

Siemel Naran - 13 May 2005 23:20 GMT Hi. I just got the DWL-G520 PCI card, installed it on my computer which is Windows ME, but it is not working. There is no signal, and the IP address is 0.0.0.0.
But I know the router is working and there is enough signal strength available. We are using a wireless router D-Link DWL-926 Wireless G Kit Router with the PC 108Mbps notebook adapter, and it works.
Currently I have dial up on my computer.
When I go to My Network Places and right-click Properties, I get to the "Network" dialog box that has entries: [ ] Client for Microsoft Windows [ ] D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B) [ ] Dial-Up Adapter. [ ] TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter
The [Dial-Up Adapter] is bound to the [TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter] protocol. But the [D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B)] is not bound to any protocol. It should be bound to a protocol whose dialog box contains text like "Obtain an IP address automatically".
So I tried to add a new protocol. Click the Add button, and it asks you to select the component type. I highlight Protocol and click Add, and the system does nothing. In fact, even if I highlight Client or Service, the system still does nothing.
You can see the screenshot at <http://www.geocities.com/siemelnaran/AddDoesNothing.bmp> for a picture of the problem.
Thanks.
Richard G. Harper - 14 May 2005 12:58 GMT If no signal strength is showing the card may be defective. Whether or not it is bound to a protocol it should be sensing a signal if it is working correctly and the drivers are correctly installed. Have you tried uninstalling the drivers, shutting down and removing the card, then reinstalling the drivers by following the manufacturer's instructions?

Have you tried > uninstalling the drivers, shutting down and removing the card, then > reinstalling the drivers by following the manufacturer's instructions? Yes, I just did this. Now there is signal strength. However, there is still no IP address. And as before, there is no protocol for TCP/IP for the dialup adapter.
When I go to My Network Places and right-click Properties, I get to the "Network" dialog box that has entries: [ ] Client for Microsoft Windows [ ] D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B) [ ] Dial-Up Adapter. [ ] TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter
Note that there is no TCP/IP for the wireless internet. Furthermore, when I click Add I get a dialog box listing Client, Protocol, Service, along with Add and Cancel buttons. No matter whether I highlight Client, Protocol, or Service, when I press Add nothing happens. I think it's supposed to popup a dialog box asking manufacturer, etc.
So I think the problem is my protocol settings are corrupted.

Cause TCP/IP, the Communications package, or the Winsock2 registry keys have become damaged or corrupt.
Solution Uninstall TCP/IP and the Communications package, remove the Winsock2 keys in the registry, and reinstall TCP/IP and the Communications.

44. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. 45. Click on the Windows Setup tab. 46. Check the box next to Communications. 47. Click the OK button.
The list box is supposed to show Accessibility, Accessories, Address Book, Communications, Desktop Themes, etc with checkboxes in front of each one, but instead shows nothing. When I click Have Disk, I eventually browse to c:\windows\options\install\ and I tried all the 4 .inf files there, but all of them still had the list box empty with nothing to install or un-install.

Mike M - 21 May 2005 21:51 GMT Mow,
The VarLDID "patch" is normally for where the user is seeing setupx errors when attempting to access Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup due to the use of a registry cleaner after deleting certain empty folders in the Program Files folder placed there during the install.
An empty Windows Setup window is often indicative of more that just problems with the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID key (the "patch" you refer to is the fully populated key) but also possibly damaged or missing entries in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OptionalComponents key. I'll be happy to supply the OP with a reg file including both keys if they contact me.

In both of the registry locations mentioned above there are entries, though it seems something may be corrupted.
Also, I believe that somewhere in the registry is the "TCP/IP Protocol" that appears in the My Network Places / Properties listbox (it may say something like "TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter"). If you can export this registry key that would likely help too, and might be the most useful. That way I could import the registry file and would create a "TCP/IP" entry for me, as adding it through My Network Places / Properties -> Add - Protocol -> Add is not working (ie. the problem of the original post of this thread).
It's going to be a little hassle because my computer has no internet connectivity, so I think I'll have to copy whatever files to a 1.44MB floppy disk on another computer, then put that disk into my computer so that I can get the files. Alternatively, if the file is very short then I could just type it out again on my computer, like copying it manually.
Thanks.
Siemel Naran - 24 May 2005 07:34 GMT > > key. I'll be happy to supply the OP with a reg file including both > > keys if they contact me. Anyway, I found out about the following command: scanreg /restore, which restores the registry to a previous state. Using this I got back my previous settings.
Now when I bind "D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter (rev.B)" to the TCP/IP, then internet explorer, file explorer, and Outlook Express cease to work. I'll start a new thread about this problem.
MowGreen [MVP] - 22 May 2005 21:11 GMT Thanks Mike.
