Rookie question: is there some way to enable the small double-screen icon on
the bottom right corner (task bar) to show my NIC's broadband Internet
connectivity and activity?  This should be a simple thing but I've looked
"everywhere."  Help!

No.  The double-screen icon is only available when using Dial_Up
Networking.  In this Win 9x systems such as Win Me differ from NT based
systems such as XP.

If you want to monitor a network card (NIC) then you will need to install
a third party product such as DUMeter (http://www.dumeter.com/) however
that costs US$19.95 when I last checked. There are also I understand some
other free applications that will do the same job.

Alternatively you could use Win Me's system monitor to monitor activity on
your NIC.

Hi Mike, I know I'm not the original OP but I'm glad you answered that as
I have been wondering how to get it on Kelly's machine <g> I have the
icons showing for mine and Johns boxes but couldn't find the way to get
them on WinME.
Mind you I have to go one better than John, because he connects wirelessly
he only gets one screen I get two <g>

Sadly Joan, it's a no go on Win 9x without using third party tools for
those connecting to the net via a wired or wireless NIC.

Thanks Mike.  I thought I was overlooking something simple, since I once did
see the icon (it WAS during my dial-up days).  I appreciate your answer.
