the old Windows machine is still working one day, Tuesday

then the next day, Wednesday, no application can connect to the internet,
it says cannot create socket, OR error in wsock32.DLL
and we cannot ping the network gateway

we needed to uninstall and reinstall windows ME,
after the tiresome process (which we had to repeat 3 times),
we can ping, and telnet, now we have real player and Mozilla Firefox running,

but still, the yahoo and windows-related services like messenger and
explorer cannot connect: here is the message

may help

I suspect, though, that your problems may be more deep-seated than that, if
you originally have IE6 installed, and then re-installed ME over the top of
that (and WMP9)
Does this often (if not always) causes what's called 'Version Soup' -
resulting in exactly the sort of issues that you're seeing with IE....
here's my standard 'spiel' on the subject

Such symptoms are frequently the result of mistakenly attempting to
reinstall ME over itself without first reverting back to IE5.5 - the
resulting 'Version Soup' is almost impossible to repair, and the only sure
way known is to completely remove IE and then reinstall whichever version
you require.

Instructions for this process are here
http://www.crashfixpc.com/ReInIE.htm

Please post back if you need more details - preferably before attempting the
process!!<g>
