Ink Cartridge-Chicanery?

I have a HP PSC 750 All-In-One but my comment probably holds true for
other brands as well.  If a trusting soul follows the manufacturer's
warnings they will replace cartridges two to three times more often
than neccessary.

After receiving the first 'ink is low' type warning I can print at
least as many pages as I did prior to the warning.  Now, I'm sure the
EARLY warning is unintentional <g> however....

Job mumbles, "...used to be you could look at the bottle and see there
was ink for your writing instrument."

The low-ink warning is a useful reminder to make sure you have a replacement
cartridge but, for the reason you cite, should not be taken as an indication
of the imminent loss of ink flow.
