Error Explanation?

I am trying to figure out why my step-father can no longer print. WinMe gives the following error
message everytime he tries to print:

File Name : LPT(01) + 00003AE9 Error : 0E : 0028 : CC998EE9

Afterwards, anything pertaining to printers is very slow to access, such as Control Panel>Printers
and the Print Que. Right after that, everything starts to glitch out bigtime, meaning, most
everything is the SysTray disappears, and sometimes the system freezes up. If I can get into Control
Panels>Printers, the HP 4 printer (the only one installed) isn't there anymore.

I have to restart to do any checking. I then removed the printer ports, then deleted the HP 4, then
restarted again, and let the hardware Wiz reinstall the ECP printer port, and then I reinstalled the
HP 4.

Still get the same error, no matter how many times I do that. That used to work and it got things
back to normal for awhile (this has been an ongoing problem for him), but now, it doesn't work
anymore and he can't print at all. I have tried other printers on his PC, and they all do the very
same thing.

Also, this time I noticed there were three ports installed for LPT:1, and one had a telephone icon
next to it? Not sure where those other two came from.

Can anyone explain that error message to me?

Does anyone know what might be causing this problem?

Could this be ECP related?

Thanks.
George

The two steps that I can think of are

a) ensuring ECP is enabled in the BIOS
b) removing *all* LPTs from DeviceManager, and also your printer driver
(use the mfr's Uninstall program if they have one) and reboot.

Rick,

Already removed *all* printer ports from device manager and let the wiz reinstall automatically on a
restart. Will have to wait until I go back over there to check the BIOS setting. I have a feeling
something is bad corrupted in the OS, though.

Thanks,
George
