Files with an msi extension should be associated with the Windows Installer
Package. Using Control Panel | Folder Options | View, what do you have
associated with the MSI file type? If there is a Restore button (there may
not be), click this and it should re-associate the MSI file type with the
Windows Installer, if not you may need to reinstall the Windows Installer in
which case please post back.

It looks as though it is associated with the windows
installer yet, obviously it isn't doing what it is
supposed to. Any idea how to re-install the installer?
Thanks,
Laura

Laura,
I would recommend that you reinstall the latest version of the Windows
Installer. KB 324638 (see below) includes instructions as to how to install
v2.0 of the Windows Installer including a link from which you can download a
new copy.
MS KB 324638 - "OFFXP: "The MSIEXEC.EXE File Is Linked to a Missing Export
MSI.DLL:222" Error Message When You Try to Install, Update, or Remove a
Windows Installer-Based Program" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=324638).
Note that it is essential that you rename or delete all copies of msi.dll
before attempting to install the Windows Installer. The KB article explains
how to do this.

OK, I tried that and the message I received was "specified
service already exists." Yet each time I want to open an
msi file, it asked me which program to use and I thought
it would automatically open any MSI extension.

OK, it says it is associated with the Windows installer
package, but there isn't a restore button anywhere... Now
what?

Use it. If the MSI extension is now associated with the Windows Installer (as
it should be) then all you should now need to do is double click the msi file
to start the installation. If that doesn't work then reinstall the Microsoft
Installer.
