Hello,

I am unable to start windows normally.  When I turn on PC it gets past the
windows ME screen then a black screen with a message - Cannot find
System.ini.  And says please insert emergency diskette or something like
that.  I have tried to start in safe mode and it goes to the "it is now safe
to shut off computer".  I don't have any emergency diskette but do however
have a recovery cd.  If i have to do a factory restore(which i hope not)
will that mean all my
infomation will be deleted?  Any help to solve this prob will be appreciated.

Thank You!

Go to www.bootdisk.com and download a boot disk image for Windows ME.
Boot your WindowsMe machine with that diskette and when it stops at
the A:\> prompt enter the following commands:

C:
CD\Windows\Command
scanreg /restore

Choose the most recent of the 5 backup registries to restore from.
Note:  The backup registries should be from the 5 most recent
sucessful startups of Windows.  If they are older than that then do
not do the restore as this will likely cause more problems.

Good luck
