It says to edit the path for the autoexec.bat file. I was
installing the software to a custom location, rather than
the default. I then installed to the recommended
location, but before the installation is complete is says
to edit the path of the autoexec.bat file or the programs
may not run properly.
I also get a "not enough memory" message when trying to
open the microsoft applications.
Not sure how to continue. I have always had problems with
the ME edition and installing various software on it.
Any other suggestions?
To repeat my previous statement, forget about, repeat forget about
autoexec.bat. I have explained the reasons and what to do in my previous
post. Have you done so, if not why not?
As for your having problems with Win me. There should be no reason for this
and Office 97 works fine. Perhaps you should have posted details of your
various problems when installing software and someone could have helped. It's
probably a bit late to do this now as it is four years since Win Me was
launched and is now in what is called extended support having reached the end
of its planned life.
You not enough memory message, especially when using Word is almost certainly
due to your Word template file, normal.dot, being corrupted. For more details
of this suggested fix see MS KB 307814 - "WD: Error Message: System Is
Dangerously Low on Resources" (http://support.Microsoft.com?kbid=307814).

Wow! What a quick response.
I did do the msconfig and this then brought up multiple
tabs. I did not see an Environment tab. I wasn't really
clear where to go from here.
Thanks for the memory information. I actually had been
having trouble with the normal template. I will look into
that once I get back into the Office.
Thanks again.

Are you using Win Me? If so you when opening MSConfig you should see seven
tabs with the second from the right labelled Environment. If this is missing
I'm not sure how to proceed but as a first step I'd suggest you try replacing
MSConfig.exe with a new copy from the Win me cab set (see below).
What happens if you edit autoexec.bat and amend PATH, and then reboot? Does
the new path "stick"? What do you see if you open a DOS windows and type
PATH? Do you see your amended path?
First note that msconfig.exe is a file protected by Win Me's system file
protection so you will need to be in Safe Mode to replace the file and may
even have to boot to DOS using a floppy and make the final rename from a DOS
prompt if that doesn't work
Msconfig.exe is contained in WIN_17.CAB of the Win Me cab set and can be
replaced by booting to Safe Mode as follows. Locate the Win Me cab files.
These are in the in the Win9x folder on the Win Me CD and normally also in
either Windows\Options\Cabs or Windows\Options\Install. Double click on
WIN_17.CAB which should open the cab, select msconfig.exe and drag it to your
system folder. See MS KB 265371 - "How to Extract and Replace a Protected
File in Windows Me" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=265371) for details of
how to extract files from the cab set. If SFP kicks in when you try to drag
the new copy to the system folder, drag it instead to your desktop, name it
msconfig.new and then drag this into the windows\system folder. Now boot to
DOS and rename msconfig.exe to msconfig.old and msconfig.new to msconfig.exe.
