I've tried to download and install updates from
Microsoft.  The installer cannot finish, yet everytime I
restart my computer I'm told that there are updates to
install.  How can I delete or remove these problem updates
and start from scratch by downloading it again?  When I;ve
tried to redownload I'm told the updates are already here.

Mauck,

Do you have Norton Antivirus or an other Symantec "product" installed or
are you attempting to do the updating from an AOL "browser" ?

If it's the former, the issue may be 1,000's of OEM*.inf files :

Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) During Setup When You Install Updates...

For the latter, open IE, click Tools, then Windows Update .

Note - try this first (rather than the scanreg /restore suggested by the KB
article that Mart refers to - the rest of the article is OK though)

Start|Run
type
SCANREG   /FIX
click OK - Windows will reboot

see if that helps

No mention of scanreg /restore in the KB article Mow referred to.

Mart,

I think we can assume that Noel was posting before the caffeine had kicked
in.  <vbg>
