BootUp

We have a PC w/Windows ME someone gave to us.  More and
more frequently now, when we boot up it always gets stuck
after the Windows ME logo comes up at a blank screen with
the cursor up in the upper lefthand corner and we have to
power down and back up again (sometimes 2 or 3 times).

When we do get on (using the #1 choice of 'Normal' logon
when prompted) the display settings are larger than we
keep them normally.  Also, sometimes after that, the
desktop screen will blink repeatedly until we move the
mouse and sometimes freeze.  We have downloaded and
used 'Stinger''Spyware''Adaware' to get rid of hijack,
trojan and spyware files but nothing helps...appreciate
some input.

Thx, M

If you have the ME CD and can get to a desktop of some kind insert the ME CD
and reinstall ME on top of itself to try to fix the problems you're having.

You should try

A registry repair:

Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\> prompt type

C: (press enter)

Now type:

cd windows\command (press enter)

Your prompt should read C:\Windows\Command, correct?

Now type:

scanreg /fix (space between g and /)

Press enter, wait for the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.

If that doesn't work, try a registry restore:

Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\> prompt and repeat the
steps above and replace the scanreg command with:

scanreg /restore (space between g and /)

Press enter, select a date PRIOR to the problem, press enter, wait for the
process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.

If you don't have a startup disk, download one from www.bootdisk.com.

Any luck?

Zee, no need to change to the command directory as it's in the path. Scanreg
/restore at the A:\> prompt will do.

Guessing you need a bit more experience.

You mean the autoexec.bat from www.bootdisk.com doesn't have
path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command? Have to admit I haven't used them - I
make my own. btw perhaps you should recommend the oem bootdisk?

scanreg /fix works fine from the bootdisk.com boot floppy - as it does from
the ME floppy. You need to use the With/out CD option though, rather than
the Minimal one

OK. Cheers, Noel. btw, Rosie bought a mouse in earlier and when I rescued
it, it ran up my trouser leg. Luckily I stopped it getting above the knee!
What a surprise though!

I got to bed relatively early last night for the 2nd time in a few days and,
indeed, the 2nd time in weeks. I have bouts of insomnia, Joan, which I've
usually attributed to the time of year, but maybe this one was a reaction to
not smoking (haven't smoked in about 7 weeks now). I'm hoping to get back to
civilised hours now. For one I'd hate to be in bed still and missing this
ethereal autumn light.

Thanks for noticing!

Glad to hear the non-smoking is going well, you obviously have more will
power than me <g>
I agree about the weather, but then it usually does change for the better
when the kids go back to school after the summer hols. <g> it's been
gloriously hot and sunny here all day just hope it keeps up until we've
had our holiday. I'm going to harass Noel again this year <vbg>

I'd have probably caved by now but for the nicotine gum. 'Cos, you know, you
can quit for months and suddenly the craving'll hit you. In the past I'd
have eventually bought a packet of cigs, but now I'll use a gum.

It's the caving in in the past that taught me that you start again for want
of a single cigarette. The rest of the pack inevitably follows and a few
hundred more packs before you're ready to try again. It's probably why they
don't sell cigs singly.

I'm very glad to hear it! Give him hell from me, Joan!

The question I have to ask....

Girl mouse, or boy mouse? - or was Rosie still around?
:)

Isn't a 'girl mouse' actually a shrew?

I notice you talk about her in the past tense.

Very tense - and unfortunately presently so. (long tale - not tail!)

Well, you got out of that one easily enough!

Reminds me of the joke *Isn't that Sherpa Tensing?* Though I prefer the
variation *Isn't that Hortense?* (*No, she's just a little tired*).

Okay guys, how about this old one?  Q: "What's the difference between a
corpuscle and a hormone?"  (I don't need to supply the answer, do I?)

Either use your restore CD to take your machine back to
day 1, or go out and spend $100.00 on XP and install that.
I'm all of a sudden having problems on my machine with Me
and I'm going to try the restore CD first. If that doesn't
work, I've been told to throw the damned box out the
window and get a new Dell, Compac, or anything besides
emachines.

Good luck

If you are so easily upset by a problem as to feel the need to throw your
PC out of the window, what makes you think that buying a new PC and using
the XP operating system is going to make any difference?
