M - 04 Sep 2004 20:08 GMT We have a PC w/Windows ME someone gave to us. More and more frequently now, when we boot up it always gets stuck after the Windows ME logo comes up at a blank screen with the cursor up in the upper lefthand corner and we have to power down and back up again (sometimes 2 or 3 times).
When we do get on (using the #1 choice of 'Normal' logon when prompted) the display settings are larger than we keep them normally. Also, sometimes after that, the desktop screen will blink repeatedly until we move the mouse and sometimes freeze. We have downloaded and used 'Stinger''Spyware''Adaware' to get rid of hijack, trojan and spyware files but nothing helps...appreciate some input.
Thx, M
Jerry - 04 Sep 2004 22:20 GMT If you have the ME CD and can get to a desktop of some kind insert the ME CD and reinstall ME on top of itself to try to fix the problems you're having.

A registry repair:
Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\> prompt type
C: (press enter)
Now type:
cd windows\command (press enter)
Your prompt should read C:\Windows\Command, correct?
Now type:
scanreg /fix (space between g and /)
Press enter, wait for the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.
If that doesn't work, try a registry restore:
Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\> prompt and repeat the steps above and replace the scanreg command with:
scanreg /restore (space between g and /)
Press enter, select a date PRIOR to the problem, press enter, wait for the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk.
If you don't have a startup disk, download one from www.bootdisk.com.
Any luck?

Scanreg /restore at the A:\> prompt will do.

Guessing you need a bit more experience.

Have to admit I haven't used them - I make my own. btw perhaps you should recommend the oem bootdisk?

Cheers, Noel. btw, Rosie bought a mouse in earlier and when I rescued it, it ran up my trouser leg. Luckily I stopped it getting above the knee! What a surprise though!

> It would have been Good King Harry all over again! > > Shane Shane - 05 Sep 2004 11:47 GMT I got to bed relatively early last night for the 2nd time in a few days and, indeed, the 2nd time in weeks. I have bouts of insomnia, Joan, which I've usually attributed to the time of year, but maybe this one was a reaction to not smoking (haven't smoked in about 7 weeks now). I'm hoping to get back to civilised hours now. For one I'd hate to be in bed still and missing this ethereal autumn light.
Thanks for noticing!

I'm going to harass Noel again this year <vbg> Joan

'Cos, you know, you can quit for months and suddenly the craving'll hit you. In the past I'd have eventually bought a packet of cigs, but now I'll use a gum.
It's the caving in in the past that taught me that you start again for want of a single cigarette. The rest of the pack inevitably follows and a few hundred more packs before you're ready to try again. It's probably why they don't sell cigs singly.

Reminds me of the joke *Isn't that Sherpa Tensing?* Though I prefer the variation *Isn't that Hortense?* (*No, she's just a little tired*).

If that doesn't work, I've been told to throw the damned box out the window and get a new Dell, Compac, or anything besides emachines.
Good luck
