Win me stops loading at the Win me logo.  If you hit esc
it will say  "Please wait while setup updates your
configuration files.  This may take a few minutes"  It use
to take about 15 minutes to load and go to the desktop.
Everywhere I went for help it said Windows need to be
reinstalled.  I went to windows\options\cabs\install and
it re-install all the way until it got to the restart.
After restart it now hangs at the same thing but never
goes to the desk top.  Can I use the MicrosoftKnowledge
article 261595 to unistall win me and still have an
existing win me?  If not please give any advice you may
have.  omputer is a Sony PCV-J150 and only thing they
suggest is to do a recovery which is really not a recovery
of anything but the original stuff. Nothing else that is
on hard drive.
Thanking you in advance.Ginger

I can't see where 261595 talks about uninstalling Win Me, perhaps you quoted
the wrong KB article.  Nevertheless you cannot uninstall Win Me back to your
previous Win Me although it might be possible if you chose to reinstall Win Me
to another directory than Windows but even then I suspect you would be left in
even more of a mess than you are at present.

What changes had you made to your system that led to the initial problem of a
slow startup.  Something must have changed otherwise there would have been no
"Please wait while setup updates your configuration files." message.  This
might give a clue as to the cause of your problems.

272159 is only relevant where the user installed Win Me as an upgrade to a
previous operating system such as Win 95, 98 or 98SE and chose to save their
previous operating system's files when upgrading and has not since deleted or
uninstalled those files.

I recommend inspecting for a C:\Windows\wininit.ini file, which may be
corrupted and unable to finish, thereby hanging the machine.  Boot with
an EBD and search for the file.

If found, rename it to wininit.jnk, and reboot.  Hopefully, the hang
will disappear and the machine will get to the Normal desktop.  If so,
one can inspect the wininit file in Notepad to determine its origin.
Some update or app installation may have to be repeated, so this wininit
file can complete after reboot.

Windows 9x (95, 98, and Me) is not designed to support that much memory-at
least not in its default configuration. At start-up, it reserves space for a
memory cache called Vcache, whose size is proportional to the amount of
memory on the system. This space is drawn from a memory area called the
system arena, which is used by Windows internally for other purposes. When
the amount of memory is much larger than 512MB, the Vcache can consume all
or most of the system arena, causing Windows to report insufficient memory.

The solution is to put a lid on the amount of memory allocated to the
Vcache. Open the file C:\Windows\System.ini in Notepad and find the section
header [vcache]. Look within this section for a line beginning
MaxFileCache=. If you don't see this line before the next section header
(the next line of text in square brackets), insert a MaxFileCache= line just
after the [vcache] header. You need to set it to 512MB, but the values are
expressed in kilobytes, so the correct number is 512 multiplied by 1,024, or
524,288. Edit the line so it reads MaxFilecache=524288, save the System.ini
file, and restart your system.
