You can use the MSCONFIG utility to change the startup behaviour.
From Safe Mode - or Normal Mode.
Start|Run , and type MSCONFIG - click OK
Click on the Startup tab, and UNcheck any items related to McAfee
click on APPLY, and OK - windows will reboot, and you should be able to do
whatever you need to.
I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling McAfee (or uninstalling it and
getting a decent one!)

Thanks. I'll give it a try when I get home. I purchased
the Virus software from McAfee online and downloaded it,
so I'm not sure I know how to reinstall it if I uninstall
it. But I can't at least keep it from running and locking
my machine.
I appreciate your giving me some helpful advice instead of
just criticizing McAfee.

Believe me - the temptation was there!(and what Mike said was perfectly
true, BTW)
Good Luck
