No Automatic Checkpoints Created in System Restore

I need help getting automatic checkpoint creation working.

I can create a checkpoint and on Updates one is created but my system does
not create the daily idle session checkpoints.  I applied the Smgr.dll
update version 4.90.0.3003 which flushed _Restore and created a checkpoint,
but nothing more created since.

I can create one manually, but would like the activate the manual features.

When I do properties on _Restore it shows 3682 files and 5 folders although
when I look in the folder I only see 4 files (diskcfg.dat, srdiskid.dat,
vxdmon.cfg, vxdmon.dat).

I looked at the troubleshooting methods (1, 2 and 3) in KBdoc 303354.  I
checked registry entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VxDMon and could
not find DelayFirstRstpt at all.

I run Norton AV, ZoneAlarm and a screen saver.  Is likely that this process
prevent me from having idle time ?

First check whether you can make a manual checkpoint or not.  If not, post
back details as automatic checkpoints will not be created if you are
unable to
create manual checkpoints.  If however you can make manual checkpoints
please
read on.

The absence of automatic checkpoints is normally because either there is
no
system idle time, such as when the user is running a program such as
seti@home, folding@home or other similar programs, or because a background
application is fooling Win Me's state manager.exe into thinking that the
system is not idle although this is not in fact the case.  Examples of the
latter utility include v4 of MotherBoardMonitor (but not v5), Cacheman,
The
Cleaner (TCActive and TCMonitor) and Norton's System Doctor where users
have
reported use of the Disk Health sensor has prevented the creation of
automatic
checkpoints.  NAV7 has also been reported as causing similar problems in
certain circumstances. Other users have reported similar behaviour due to
their always on cable or ADSL connection continually polling their HD and
thus
giving the impression that the system is never idle.

A significant number of users report that 3.x versions of Zone Alarm also
prevent the creation of automatic checkpoints but this doesn't seem to
affect
all ZA users (including myself).   This problem seems though to have been
fixed in the newer 4.x version of ZA Pro.  Similar problems have been
experienced by BlackIce users and other software firewalls have also been
reported to cause some users similar problems.

One user recently reported that B's CLIP UDF packet writing software
(http://www.bhacorp.com/products/clip/clip.html) also prevented the
creation
of automatic checkpoints.  Another user has recently reported that
CookieWall
by AnalogX will prevent automatic checkpoints being made if its "Scan for
cookies every .... seconds" is set to a value less than 121 seconds (two
minutes).

Basically you will have to do the hard work in determining what is
interfering
with the operation of System Restore by stopping the various background
processes and activities that you have launching when you boot your system
until you discover which is causing you the problems.  A good place to
start
would be to look at any new application that you might have installed
since
you are positive that System Restore was last creating automatic
checkpoints.

Joan, Thanks for forwarding suggestions from Mike M.  I can create a manual
checkpoint (although it is created almost immediately so not sure how good
it is).  Looks like I need to investigate programs I run which may make my
system think it is not idle.  I run NAV 7.x, ZoneAlarm 3.7.x and ICS. Mike's
post called out the first 2 as sometimes causing issues and I suspect the
third.

I will wait a few days so there is adequate time since manual backup and
uptime, then disable all 3 and my internet connection to see if an automatic
checkpoint is created.  If so at least I can then narrow it down and post my
findings.

Thanks again.

Zone Alarm is probably the culprit here....  try upgrading to v4 if you can,
or switching off logging (which may be the root cause)
ICS shouldn't cause problems - I have it on two ME boxes (one as client, one
as host - different networks), with no problems seen

So, I turned shutdown my internet connection, shutdown ZoneAlarm, turned off
ICS, disabled NAV, .... waited, and tasa, I got an Automatic System
Checkpoint.

I then reinstated everything and sure enough no more checkpoints created.

So, I followed Noel's advise (thanks a bunch) and installed ZoneAlarm V4.x
(I uninstalled V3 and did a clean install of V4).  Now it's working just
fine.

My only question now would be how do I modify frequency so I only create one
every 48 hours instead of every 10?

You don't :)
(It is possible - but not advisable. Email me if you're really sure you want
to do this)

I guess my 'blonde question' would be......."why would you want to
change the frequency of SR"????

And the 'blonde answer' would be to turn your computer off for 15 hours
out of 24 (duh......grin).

<vbg> I'm not blonde but even I wondered why on earth he would want to.
