All
finally got Scandisk to run ok. Done.
Now, Disk Defragmenter will not run, even in Safe Mode.
Read a few articles on the subject that seemed written
about Win98 not ME though they were titled "ME", no help.
Used EnditAll to close all programs, in safe mode, and
tried Disk Defrag again, to no avail.
Apparently there is no "DOS MODE" disk defrag option, as
there is with ScanDisk.
Any help???

Make sure that your screensaver (if any) is disabled and if you are using a
constant on Net connection, i.e. cable modem or DSL, disable the modem.
(data packets are often sent to 'renew your IP lease' and this will can
interfere with defrag)
Articles regarding defrag, written for Win98, should still be applicable to
Me, BTW.

Get the free ScanDefrag. It is the most advanced disk maintenance
program there is. It runs Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk, and Disk
Defragmenter. It's easy to setup and use, and it can deal with
problems like "drive's contents have changed: restarting...".
Get it and read about all the options it has that you can use.
