Steve - 26 Feb 2004 22:33 GMT I run Windows Me with an 80G primary master hard drive & a 20G secondary master hard drive. defrag.exe will defrag the primary master hard drive ok with no problem of any kind. However, when I try to defrag the secondary master hard drive it stops after 10% completed with two error boxes. One appears to be an MS-DOS error box, all white with grey bottons, saying:
defrag An error has occured in your program. To keep working anyhow click ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program, click Close. You will lose information you entered since your last Save. And there are two grey buttons at the bottom. The left button says 'Close' The right button says 'Ignore' (selecting the 'Ignore' button has no effect of any kind!
The second error box appears to be a Windows error box, with blue bar across the top, saying:
Defrag has caused an error in DEFRAG.EXE Defrag will now close.
If you continue to experience problems, Try restarting your computer. (restarting has no effect at all) There is a yellow upside down triangle with an explanation point in it to the left of the working & a Close button.
Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Thanks in advance for the help Steve in Memphis
Rick T - 26 Feb 2004 23:01 GMT Hi steve
Run a scandisk with a thorough check, maybe even a surface-check, on the drive before trying to defrag again. If you have TSRs running which may try to access the disk, run both in Safe Mode.

However!! Did the thorough scandisk; I have no idea what TSRs may be, but to the best of my knowledge, no programs were running when I redid the defrag in SAFE mode. Exact same problem occured, same two message boxes. Any other idesa???
One other thing, I found a 15 day trial version of a commercial defrager for sale, downloaded it, installed it, ran it, it worked perfect!?! Uninstalled it, removed it totally, the Windows defrag still would not work, same two error messages!?!
Very stange!! Any ideas at all????? Thanks again Steve

Heirloom will know the link. And don't feel bad.......Rick comes from a foreign country and I don't have a clue what a TSR is either.....LOL.

Steve - 27 Feb 2004 15:20 GMT Thanks Heather It was indeed Diskeeper, which seems to be a very excellent product. I've been able to find a few site with the free trial version, but none with just a totally free whole deal download. I'd really like that like if you can get it. And, I also do not know who, or what, Heirloom might be. Again Thanks Steve in Memphis

Heather - 27 Feb 2004 21:44 GMT Hi Steve.......I put "Diskeeper Lite" into Google and came up with a couple of spots. This is not as full-featured as the trial you used, but hopefully you can get it at the following website........it diverts you to the Executive site.....

Rick T - 27 Feb 2004 04:03 GMT Mebbe turn off every Defrag option and turn them on one at a time; my money's on the "arrange my program files so they start faster" being the problem; but turn off both that and the "check for errors" bit, just to see.

Got it exactly right!!! With the 'arrange my program files . . ." unselected the Windows defrag works perfectsly. Kind of a new strange now, though. Now when I run the defrag with the 'arrange my . . .' checked, the defrag simply stops!! No error message nor error box at all!! Nonetheless, my problem is solved & I am very grateful!! Again many thanks Steve in Memphis

I don't want to risk my Hero status by suggesting you reset the flag using fdisk but that might work (don't change the wrong hd).
Rick Hero <g>
Noel Paton - 27 Feb 2004 20:03 GMT Probably easier - try deleting the contents of the C:\Windows\APPLOG folder - there may be a broken link in here. The contents should be rebuilt after a reboot http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=218160

Rick T = HERO (which we already knew) & now Noel Paton = HERO clearing APPLOG has solved all problems)
Thanks guys. I'm amazed with you'll guy's knowledge!! Steve in Memphis
>-----Original Message----- >Probably easier - try deleting the contents of the C:\Windows\APPLOG [quoted text clipped - 25 lines] > >. Heather - 27 Feb 2004 22:34 GMT Harumph!! They will not be able to get thru the doorframe if you keep calling them HEROES!! (VBG)
Which brings a question of my own.......Noel-Hero.....should you ever clear out the APPLOG folder from time to time......or just leave it. Sometimes I take out the larger files. Just a silly question, but a HERO can handle it (ROFL).
Just a female.......
> Well!!! There now be two HEROs!!!! > [quoted text clipped - 42 lines] > > > >. Noel Paton - 27 Feb 2004 23:27 GMT As one hero to another (<?>) - no! the whole idea of the applog folder is that the contents keep track of the 'most often/used ' programs, and then optimises the defrag to make those ones load faster. Deleting ANY files within the folder could mean
1) prolonged Defrag times, due to reorganisation of significant parts of the OS 2) slower loading of programs due to such action 3) corrupted APPLOG contents - and you (especially) know where that leads!<g>

Thanks.......I wondered if you ever deleted any of it.....not that it matters. The only ones I removed were from programs I was either not using or had removed.
I treat it with the utmost respect now that Jack M. figured out what was wrong. Where is he, btw??? I miss his posts. But I guess there is only room for 2 heros.......and a heroine.......bwa ha ha.
Oh.....collecting up pub nites for June.....care to join in? It will be cheap coz I am allergic to beer......(and pork, so no sausages). Just joshing you.....but am now beginning to realize we are really going......yahoo!!

I'm always available for alcohol, Figgs - as you've probably worked out by now. I'm not even too fussy about quantity - so long as it's 'enough' !! <VBG>
Shame about the sausages, though - still, I suppose it means all the more for me!
Oh - and BTW, Yahoo is a dirty word in this country at present (they've just taken control of the BTOpenworld ISP), so mind your language! (Waheyyyy, is OK, though)

Yee Gods (a switch from Yahoo)......you shur tok funnie. I can hear that Scottish Welsh accent from over here!! OK......you get my beer and sausages....I will have white wine and filet mignon.....your treat!! heh heh.
So Yahoo invaded, did they. I saw in the paper today that they made big money this year.....catching up to Google they are. But Billy Gates is still at the top of the money list. I can't even imagine one billion dollars, let alone 48 of them!!
