I haven't finished all the instructions yet, but first make sure you are
disconnected from the internet.....and shut down your screen saver.  Click
on a empty spot on the desktop, pick Options and then the tab for screen
saver.  Change it to NONE and click Apply.

Then go to Safe Mode and run Scandisk and Defrag in that mode.  The
directions follow on how to get into safe mode and out again.

Go to Start/Shutdown, change to Restart and that is called rebooting.  Hold
down the Ctrl key (or F8) while it shuts down and reboots......this should
bring up a black and white screen with 4 choices.....pick #3 which is Safe
Mode.....hit Enter.

When the funny looking white screen comes up (and you can close the Help
Screen that also comes up), it will have the words "Safe Mode" in each
corner of the screen.

Now go to Start/Accessories/SystemTools/Scandisk and run that......do the
same with Defrag.

When you are finished, click on Start/Shutdown and let it reboot (restart)
again.  It will come back up in Windows.......the only thing you have to fix
is that your desktop icons will be changed around probably.

And that is how to scandisk and defrag in Safe Mode.  Any other
questions......just ask.

Cheers......Heather

Neither internet or screensaver do anything in Safe Mode (do they?)

I dunno......do they?  I always disconnect and disable the screen
saver......never crossed my mind not to.  Most times I just use EndItAll and
scandisk & defrag.....and I have to then.  I don't run them both in Safe
Mode all that often.

I dunno, I just use the ScanDefrag these days. (Mind you I never had any
problems with either anyways)

I don't use ScanDefrag, but ever since I used Diskeeper Lite and version 8,
I don't have to shut down anything.  Even Zone Alarm popping up doesn't
interfere......and I can't find anything in the Registry that would solve
this.  Not that it is a bad thing.....grin.

I do a Safe Mode one now and again......but usually just do it in Windows
with the internet connection off.
