Config.sys Access & Norton Anti-Virus Failure to Scan

In RUN when I type "edit c:\config.sys", I get the MS-Dos
editor window with C:\Config.sys at the top of the view
area, but I get no lines of characters at all in the view
area.  Doesn't this mean that access to config.sys is
being blocked?

I am trying to find out why Norton Anti-Virus scans only
the boot record and stops.  It's not a virus problem,
since I did the complete Norton online scan with no
problem.  My thinking is that whatever is blocking the
virus scan running on my desktop is also blocking the
display of config.sys, which I wanted to access per
Symantec instructions for working on the scan problem.

Once I had ZoneAlarm on this client, but it seems to be
entirely removed. THANKS!

As you've found - ME doesn't use the CONFIG SYS file at all - it's only
there for compatibility reasons.

NAV has a very unenviable record in ME - and they still haven't learnt this
simple fact yet.

What version of NAV are you using? versions prior to 2001 are NOT ME
compatible at all - and those after are prone to give problems.

I would seriously think about uninstalling NAV, and using a less intrusive
AV - my personal favourite is AVG from www.grisoft.com (and it's free!)

Interesting!  I am using Norton SystemWorks 2003.
Symantec's instructions for addressing this issue in ME
include opening config.sys!  Since my technical skills are
limited, I avoid free software other than very simple
stuff because I can't solve really complex issues.  Guess
I'll just pester the good Symantec folks in Bangalore, or
whereever their email response team is.

Believe me - you'll be better off with something else (ANYthing else - a
slipper, even! <g>).

AVG is not the *best* - but it's never let me down yet, and I have been
attacked by some of the best, so give it a try.
