Imminent failure....

I am new here. I did read the "making good newsgroup posts"
It is suggested to me to replace my hard drive before it
actually fails. And I so agree. But being pretty much self-
taught, I am wondering about a couple things.

1.Does anyone know or is there anywhere to find out what
may have caused this to happen in the first place, like to
help prevent this from occuring again after I get hard
drive replaced?
2.And which hard drive needs to be replaced?, as there's
two installed on my PC. Or could they both be bad?
3.If only one is bad, like if it's my C drive can I
replace it with my D drive or visa versa.

Also the day it first did, as I described in other post, I
came home, had left PC on and it was froze. So I shut it
down manually. I then started it back up and there it was.
My moniter changed that day as well. It's not as clear,
it's fuzzyish around the windows edges and faint greyish
lines going across my monitor

PLEASE stop posting these questions all over the place!
You have had answers on all points elsewhere.

The 'Imminent disk failure' is from the hardware - and indicates that your
hardware is getting old, and about to fail - what exactly is happening is
not known, except that  - probably- the disk-test is detecting an increase
in the number of attempts required to access the boot record on the disk -
possibly indicating a disk that's just 'wearing out'.

You BIOS will tell you which disk is the problem one - or you can download
the disk tester from the manufacturer's website to get detailed info.

You other problems may ALL be related to this one - REPLACE THE DISK!!!

If you're not certain what you're doing - call in the experts! - this is one
thing that we really cannot solve for you.

I knew that I had to replace at least one of my hard
drive's before I ever posted,as that seemed quite obvious.
What is not as obvious is why is it that I got one reply
saying...
"I'd get the hard drive replaced before it fails." And a
reply in agreement to the one reply.
And since then I've been replied to with, "As you have
been clearly told by others" and " PLEASE stop posting
these questuons all over the place! You have answers on all
points elsewhere" Who are the "others" that have "clearly"
told me??? And I had NO idea that I had gotten "answers on
ALL points elsewhere" All & Elsewhere where???  I do see
that it is very obvious that this is my first time here
and I do apologize for being quite obvious at that.
And I see I wasn't very clear on what I was looking to
learn about on my 1st post, nor on the 2nd post. I did,
however learn some about posting and I did get a response
to 2 of 3 questions. I will get the disk replaced as soon
as I find out which one it is. And ty, I now have an idea
of how to find this out. Seems to make sense to first find
out which one needs to be replaced. If I'm not certain
about what I AM doing? At posting, I was not certain about
what I was doing. But, call the experts in?
Really, what is up with that? I was not certain as to
what's with PC, other than the obvious. Isn't this all
about people who aren't "certain" about something to do
with a PC or something a PC is doing? What was so hard with
maybe steering a new person in the right direction on the
do's & dont's of posting, without... maybe my posting's
were aggitating to you. I seen the "important" subject
post's so maybe all the replies by other's who answered all
question's elsewhere could not be seen, you think?

For the past two days, you have been peppering these newsgroups with
questions, frequently creating new threads as responses to posted answers to
your original questions -

Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's -
where you'll find advice in the type of information needed for us to assist
you.

It has become apparent over the course of these posts that you have a
certain amount of 'stick-to-it-iveness' - and I have no doubt whatever that
with a little coaching you could easily accomplish an HD replacement
yourself. However, the first one is always a little daunting, and if you're
not at least familiar with the insides of your PC already, I would suggest
that you get the help of someone experienced (even if not professional)
before attempting it. If you get the full HD 'kit' rather than an OEM
'black-box' HD, then it should come with
1) instructions
2) a floppy disk (  or perhaps a bootable CD, these days) with software
which is capable of transferring your existing system from the old to the
new HD - without  having to reinstall everything.

The error message you are seeing often contains the details of which disk is
failing - although it's more likely to say 'Disk 0' than 'X:' - and you need
to know which HD is defined as which in the BIOS. (I've never actually seen
one of these messages on any of my systems, as I tend to upgrade the HD
before it gets that old - so I can't give chapter-and-verse on this)

I, again apologize to all. I guess I could say "we got off
on the the wrong foot".I understand about posting now. So
I hope ya all won't ignore me. I promise to behave.:-)
I want to Thank You for the reply. I can hit F10 and it
takes me to where I can check out a few things, like I can
test the driver's 0 & 1, before I wasn't sure what I was
testing. I have done the tests. 0 failes the test so that
would be the one, but when I test 1,the test won't complete
So I guess now I am somewhat curious as to why or how to
get it to at least complete the test. Meanwhile, since my
D/1 drive is my music drive, I am going to put all music
files on some CD's, just in case that HD is runnin out of
steam too. Oh and very good
perception on your part. :-)  juligirl
Last time, Am sorry for all.

It's quite possible that the drive that can't complete the tests isn't
compliant - you can check that at the manufacturer's site.

No worries - we all get it wrong sometimes!

What do you mean by 'not compliant"? Not compliant with...
Thanx for all your help and knowledge. I really do
appreciate it.     Juligirl :-)

Not compliant with SMART technology - older disks aren't.
