I need to uninstall Earthlink because the first install
failed to include a  dll file.
But the Install/Uninstall window in empty.
Help!!!! :-))

And why can't you do another install on top of the incompleted previous
attempt?

Hi Jerry - thank you for your reply.
Two things:
first - I did attempt a second install, and then got a
run time error box pop up (I am sorry, but I closed the
box before noting the details),
second, I would like to solve the empty Install/Uninstall
window problem as I will need it at some point in the
future.

You can try this or use System Restore to see if you can get a good
Registry back.

All Installed Programs May Not Be Displayed in the Add/Remove Programs
Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=240348

I have fixed several of these recently for others.
The problem will occur in these two situations:

1. The uninstall keyname for an application is greater than 63
characters.
Solution: Rename the keyname.
e.g. this is invalid
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\1234
567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234]

2. The DisplayName for the key is greater than 63 characters.
Solution: Shorten DisplayName
e.g. this is invalid
"DisplayName"="1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901
234"

If you need a second opinion, export the key to a text file and email
it to me.

*** Note that the invalid entry that can cause this is not necessarily
connected with the ones missing so you must check all entries.

Noel - thank you very much for the practical advice, and
offer of help.
I have made hard copies of your message, and the various
MS Knowledge Base Articles, which I intend to study over
the next two days.
Tuesday or Wednesday hopefully will be light, and so I
will address this problem when I have time and am relaxed.
Thank you  once again.
Douglas.

The sooner you get to it the better - this problem can become irremediable
if left too long.
Good Luck

Thanks once more Noel - and I hear you.

The problem will not be neglected for a minute more than
necessary. But I am very aware of my limited knowledge.
And this tends to stress me. So to ensure I do not
inadvertently commit a drastic error I want to read as
much as I can, and then get to grips with the problem
when I have no pressure of time.
