i cant install the right driver to provide me with the
proper high resolution, i am stuck with 16 color

Download Win Me compatible drivers for your graphics adapter from the
manufacturer's web site. If you don't know the male and/or model of your
graphics card you can determine this using a program such as aida32 which can
be downloaded from http://www.aumha.org/freeware.htm
(http://forum.aumha.org/overflow/aida32.zip).

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.
