Only way to run defrag (I have the same problem recently)
is to use selective start up each time I now have to do
that for disk clean up as well -  Click Start -
programmes - accessories - system tools and then click
system information on the tools menu click system
configuration utility on the general tab click selective
start up if you have Process config sys file uncheck box
Process autoexec bat file uncheck box process winstart.bat
file uncheck box process system inifile uncheck box
process win ini file uncheck box load start up items
uncheck box - DO NOT UNCHECK ANYTHING I HAVE NOT MENTIONED
then when prompted reboot and run defrag - once done
retick all the boxes you have unchecked and then reboot to
normal start up.  I have windows me so yours shoulf be the
same as mine if you use windows me.

It would be easier just to run the Defrag from the Safe Mode.......making
sure the screen saver (if any) is turned off.  If that doesn't work, be sure
to unplug any "constant on" Net connection, i.e. Cable Modem or DSL.
